January 2024. This is our first visit from Tokyo.

We took our 4 and 7 year olds with us. We only went to Yunessun, and did not go to Yunomori. I was worried about whether it would be cold, so we prepared a lot of things, but it was fine.

The kids were delighted! The 7 year old played from 10:30 to 14:30. His favorite was the stream. The 4 year old left around 12:00 and took a nap in the tatami rest area (5th floor). We brought our own towels. We could rent swimsuits and towels.

It was cold in January, so I was worried that it would be cold when we had lunch inside, so I brought something to wear over my clothes, but my 4 year old said he was cold, so we just put a towel over his shoulders and it was fine!

Flip flops and other footwear were prohibited, and the stone floor inside was rough and painful (like health sandals). My 4 year old made a big fuss saying "It hurts, it hurts!" and we had to carry him around.

There was a long line for the water slide, probably because many people were still on holiday after the New Year, and my son, who loves slides, only went on it 2-3 times.

It took about 30 seconds of brisk walking to get to the open-air observation bath, and it was quite cold in January. Well, I guess that's part of the fun of going in January. It felt good to bathe in the open-air bath in the cold!

It was mostly fun, but there were no attractions that stood out, and it didn't feel like you could play there for long. If I'm in the area, I might stop by again, but I don't think I'll go again...
If I want to have fun at the pool in winter, I might go.

Really fun half day. The different pools with coffee and wine and sake were cool. Only one slide. Beautiful view from outside pool. Great for kids and teenagers. The onsen area was very peaceful and beautiful views while soaking in hot tubs.

Went to Yunessun (spelled Yoo-ness-sang) last Thursday and luckily on this day, its not packed with people, so we were on our relaxing pace. Its not a super-modern state of the art onsen, but where else can you have such quaint onsen?

Transportation
From Shinjuku station to Hakone-Yumoto station, you can either take Limited express aka Romancecar (2020 yen for 1 hr 25 mins) or if you're a cheapo like me, you can take the local route via Odakyu line for 850 yen) for 2 hours ride. Once you've arrived the station, just head to bus station that goes to Yunessun or Kowaien. Oh yes, you can pay both trains and busses using your PASMO card.

Admission & Tickets
The actual admission is 2,800 per adult, but if you get your hands on the online coupon (just print it) via their site http://www.yunessun.com/ticket/, you can choose some package with or without meals. Its in Japanese, but you can just paste the link on Google and have it translated to English. I've got mine on 'couple discount' which is 5,000 yen for two, which allows me to go to both Yunessun (swimsuit zone) and Mori No Yu (naked zone). I've passed on the naked zone since I've only arrived there at 2pm.

Once tickets are purchased at front desk, you'll be given a RFID watch that allows you to perform multiple transaction from renting towels, buying drinks from vending machine, pay for photo op at Dr Fish Spa, lockers access to purchasing meal. At the end of your trip, just slot your watch in the vending machine and it will tally up your purchase.

After you've located the locker and have everything changed, this is where it gets interesting. The entrance of Yunessun is at the exit/end of the washroom/changing room. Took us awhile to figure that out.

There are two parts of Yunessun - the indoor and the outdoor area. The outdoor area has all the beverage-related onsen from Coffee, Sake, Green Tea, Wine and even charcoal flavor (blue colored onsen..?). If the crowd is just right, you can appreciate the forest trees at this area. Love it. Unfortunately, despite the nature surrounding the onsen, the only genuine flavor I can feel is the coffee onsen. Seems like the onsens that are 'sponsored' here are mostly derived from genuine flavor. The wine, sakes and green tea smells very perfumey and artificial. But what the heck...

The indoor area has something interesting as well. The dead sea onsen is quite amusing. But ladies...erm, just heads up...a bit prickly down there. The Dr Fish spa is not something new to me, but for those who haven't experienced Garra Ruffa fish nibbling off your dead skin, its worth a try. Its a ticklish experience ;)

Every few months or so, Yunessun will feature a new-themed onsen. For my visit, they have corn-chowder jacuzzis from the food brand called Gari Gari Kun. Every few hours (timetable visibly shown at some featured location), there will be a 'chef' coming and with actual (or simulated) food ingredients and he/she will pour them to visitors. I've got 'caramelized' by the chef. Yummy!

Would I recommend this attraction? Its up to you...if you have more time in Tokyo, do take advantage of the Free Hokane Pass that allows you to do hop-in and off to location around Hokane. Its a cosy trip on the other side...why not...

Ignore what you've seen on Instagram/TikTok and in the reviews. Yunessun turned out to be a place I'd never return to, nor recommend to even my worst enemy.

It's inexpensive with potential to be a fun place, but you get what you pay for. They crammed thousands upon thousands of adults & children into the place, and it was obvious that they didn't care to limit admissions. It was so overrun and crowded that it was impossible to use almost any of the pools, slides, or hot spring baths. Lockers were barely available,

There were mere inches in between people in the pools and baths - which is extremely dangerous - in addition to being plain obnoxious. They allow families & children to bring in giant inflated pool rings, toys, beach balls & floaties which made things way more crowded than it could've been (in many USA water parks, they don't allow these to be brought in).

There were long queues for EVERYTHING. Food, showers, hairdryers, bathrooms (which were filthy), clothing dryers - EVERYTHING. The queue for Dr. Fish took well over an hour (and was an additional cost). Even the line to checkout and leave was wrapped around the entire floor and extended down the stairwell.

Getting there by public transit is a real chore too. There are no direct trains, and the public local buses to get there are at the mercy of traffic & hills. One narrow cliff-side lane in, one narrow cliff-side lane out. From the train, it took close to an hour on the local bus.

Don't waste your time. Yunessun is not worth the trip.

Yunessun was such a blast. We were staying in a local ryokan with a private onsen, but wanted a public onsen experience. The Mori no Yu section of Yunessun is really beautiful - we went in the morning when it opened and I had the women's section all to myself! I had fun exploring the collagen, beer, laydown, and other onsen. The Yunessun section was definitely more family-oriented with lots of kids, but we enjoyed the silliness of bathing in wine, tea, sake, and coffee, plus the water slides. Overall, a very unique experience in Japan.

Yunessun onsen is a fantastic and relaxing experience for family, adults and kids. They have multiple themed spa areas such as wine, coffee, tea where the spa water actually has those ingredients mixed in the water and the spa decorations match. There is an outside spa on terraces with a great view - and having gone in October they had dozens of floating pumpkins in the spa to simulate a pumpkin patch. Our kids (9 & 12) loved it and it was completely safe for them and probably younger kids too. We stayed in a local Air B&B house and were able to see other local attractions such as Lake Ashi, the Hakone black eggs, the Owakudani volcanic steam vents, Odawara Castle, and others.

We spent 6 hours here and $150 covered parking, my suit rental, and lunch and entrance to swimsuit side for a family of 4. We adults loved the Mountain view pool with plenty of variety in temp and room for social distancing, the girls loved the water slide (volcano themed right now) and exploring the various pools inside and everyone enjoyed the foot pedicure for 100¥. Look at the hours and line up early, the line gets long. The food at the poolside food court was delicious and on par cost wise for Japan amusement activities with a variety of kid friendly and Japanese cuisine for all ages. Our girls are 8 and they loved it, we were not put off by any of the interior and didn't find things in poor repair like some reviews have indicated. They have also done some modifications for COVID with windows open everywhere possible to increase ventilation, a fan and open door in the cave, and distancing markers in the water slide line. The inside pool was crowded for sure but we felt safe outside and we're able to distance for soaking everywhere but the splash climbing structure

I went back after a long time, and the outdoor facility "Yutopia" was gone!
It had been scaled down considerably! There was only a small pool and a few baths that smelled of strange air freshener... my elementary school-aged child quickly got bored of it and didn't enjoy it at all.
The only good thing was the Rodeo Mountain (water slide) outside. (The man supervising was lazy and not very motivated...)
The trash cans in the food corner were overflowing to the point where you couldn't put any trash in, but they never changed them!
I wish the photo staff at the entrance and the food corner staff would clean the trash cans if they were just standing there! It's very unsanitary.
It's also stingy that towels are charged separately these days.
The entire staff was unmotivated.
The food in the food corner was expensive and tasted bad, like it was back in the Showa era.
It was small and cramped for the price, and really boring.
The old Yunessun, which was fun, is no longer there...

The water park is composed of one part Onsen and another plus water Attraction park.
The water park is awful! To flee absolutely! Extremely dubious cleanliness: full of mold in outdoor baths , damaged infrastructure with torn floors, overcrowding of children and adults , basic outdoor slides , ice merchants and snacks everywhere with a noise level close to an airport ...
If you are looking for calm and serenity, you are not in the right place ...
Only positive the second part with the Onsens with fewer people and different pools with different thermal waters.

Here we got to bathe in red wine, sake, coffee, sports drink, green tea. Fish that gnawed on the feet. Beautiful outdoor pool with mountain views. Fun and crazy. Clean and well maintained. Friendly staff. The local bus stopped right outside.
