I came to Mito traveling on the Tokiwa express. I was therefore interested in visiting the shrine that gave its name to the train. For Mito it is probably the main shrine in town reflecting its connection to the Mito clan. A wedding couple added...More

This Shinto shrine is located just outside the Eastern gate of Kairakuen. It is a relatively new shrine founded in 1873 that worships the second Mito Tokugawa lord Mitsukuni and the ninth Nariaki. It was quite popular after the dissolution of the feudal domains to...More

A small museum explaining the history of Mito and its owner. A nice introduction before visiting Kairakuen.

The gate overlooked the lake. Smaller shrines were picturesque. Centered in a nature park. Day visit spot.

As with Kobuntei, we found we enjoyed visiting Tokiwa Shrine and taking photographs there, more interesting and rewarding than we did visiting the garden. The shrine was peaceful and empty, we were the only people there at the time. It was the final day of...More

Tokiwa Shrine was founded in 1874 to venerate Tokugawa Mitsukuni, 2nd Lord of Mito-han, and Tokugawa Nariaki, 9th Lord of Mito. I came in the late afternoon during a plum wine festival. As well as umeshu vendors, there were the usual carnival stalls, a kebab...More

The Shrine is about 15 km from the station. It seems far but it is not that far in actuality. The shrine was next to a famous garden.

We fell across this place before our visit to the Kairakuen Gardens. There was a wedding taking place there and it was so colourful and pleasant. It was a peaceful place with a lovely tori and a stand full of sake containers. Nice!

The Shrine is next to one of the main garden gates. I really find these kinds of places peaceful and interesting so it was a nice visit for me. There is one big shrine Avenue or some other smaller ones around it.

It is located at the top of a hill adjoining Kairakuen, it is very quiet and a great place to spend a few relaxing moments. also has a nice gift shop and you can buy charms from the shrine maidens.
