If you've never experienced snow activites before, then in winter this lake becomes a venue for ice fishing, snow mobiles and snow quad bikes. Or if it's a fine winter's day just simply admire the vista and walk on the frozen lake.

We came to Akanko for the marimo, even though the lake was frozen. We drove on to and parked our car on the frozen Akanko. Checked out ice fishing, fascinating! Of course we couldn't see marimo in Akanko at this time of the year but...More

It was a quiet getaway at a beautiful lake. The lake is amazingly clean and clear. Good stopover to enjoy the beauty of nature. For more cultural experience, stop by Ainu Village.

For 1900 Yen you can get a 75 minute ride on a largish boat around the lake including a 15 minute stop at an island where there's a marimo (algae balls unique to the area) display and explanation. Well worth it for the amazing scenery.
