We only managed a brief stop at the lake as we didn't plan properly for that day. We spent too much time at the Japanese cranes sanctuaries as we went to 2 different places before driving on to Lake Akan. The distances are far and the roads can be remote. We'll definitely be back and will ensure we dedicate a... More

Well worth a visit in winter time as there are lots of things to see and do here. The walk from the Eco Center through the snow covered forest, along the shore and across the lake is a great experience. On the frozen lake you can hire snow mobiles, 4wheel bikes, ice skates or go ice fishing (from inside a... More

Lake Akan is picturesque any time, but in winter the ice fishing, skating, snowmobiles and ATVs are great draws for dull cold outside. Add nearby mini ski slopes and hot springs, tempura fry of your lake catch, and winter life doesn't get my better. Not particularly cheap nor close to Kushiro, it's worth the trip, though, and small inn value... More

This is a nice small town with a beautiful lake and known for its many onsen. We stayed here for 2 days in mid Dec with the intention to do smelt fishing, unfortunately that only starts in Jan :( We went to ask at the tourist information centre and it seems like there is really very little to do here... Each time I travelled to the East of Hokkaido, I'll not miss this lake out of my itinerary. For me, it is a must to come by this lake to enjoy this awesome lake and the serenity of this place. It is a wonderful place to be in, to just relax and enjoy the food and onsen. Oh yes, the... More

We visited the area on the way between overnight stops and had a walk around some lakeside areas. However, we did not drive round to the Akan Lake Observatory. We found nothing exceptional about Lake Akan itself but that is more a reflection of the proliferation of picturesque areas across Hokkaido than any lack of beauty in this area. Certainly... More

I love the water, so if you don't care about rivers, lakes, and oceans this might not interest you. We took a boat ride.

This is a great off the beaten path place to stay. There is an Aiun center right there. We did not have a chance to enjoy their nightly performances. And would go back just for that

My friends and I were here in mid-September. Sadly, autumn has not made its presence. Still, it is a beautiful place with a lovely lake. It would be so much lovelier when the leaves have changed colours. You can take a stroll around the lake and breathe in the cool, clean air. We did so, in the early morning (around... More
