A lovely place to visit to experience a bit of Japan's history. The house is in a great condition, tours and guidance are available, and the garden is also fantastic. It is located in the centre of the Bikan historical quarter.

Located just outside the Bikan Historic District, this home displays the architecture and some furnishings of a traditional Japanese home of a well-to-do merchant. Don't miss a quiet half hour stroll through a bit of history.

Rich 18 century merchant's mansion converted into museum, traditional Japanese wooden architecture. Elegant simplicity. Tatami floors, sliding doors, small inner gardens to admire. Imposing front gate to prove the importance of the owner's family. 15-20 mins will do a spin.

It was wonderful to walk around this old traditional merchants house on the tatami in bare feet that has been wonderfully preserved. A rare piece of history that is well worth exploring. The rooms are simplistically and elegantly furnished overlooking small tranquil courtyard gardens.

A piece of history to not miss in this little city. A traditional house that you can visit, wandering in the rooms (without shoes), walking on the tatami, in the little garden. Sometimes some western furniture is mixed with the Japanese ones.

This beautiful old house still has the feel of people living there. The rooms meander around several small courtyard gardens and rooms that you don't see everywhere made interesting viewing (e.g. the kitchen with its charcoal range and an original toilet). There is also a...More

Just a cross the street form the Bikan Historical Quarter lies Ohashi House. It's quiet there and one gets a good look into Japanese old style living. I love the tatami mat rooms that open up into the garden. A little museum style just right...More

I feel fortunate we took time to visit the Ohashi House despite the short afternoon we had at Kurashiki. Since the house was spared from the war and fire, it was like experiencing a remnant of history, a grand merchant home in the prosperous Kurashiki...More
