The entrance gate is lovely - massive, impressive - but the main draw for us was the Momijiyama Garden. Not a huge Japanese garden, but gorgeous and well-tended. And, on the day we were there, not very crowded, either.

This "castle" is much more of a park area and quite beautiful. There was an area that was being worked on where the base of the Sumpu Castle once stood. There were detailed signs explaining what you were looking at and the history. The park...More

Momijiyama Garden is very pleasant, although the "Fuji" at its center is a bit tacky for true Japanese garden aficionados. Listed in "Hidden Gardens of Japan" THE photo essay and reference for finding unspoiled gardens in Japan minus the tour bus mobs available on Amazon...More

Shizuoka castle is great place to visit. The huge gate welcome you and you enter the castle to understand the history.
