About
MOA Museum of Art opened its doors to the world in 1982 and, to build on its successful 35 years, underwent a whole design revamp project from 2016 to 2017 to renew its galleries and modernize various amenities. The interior designs, notably the lobby area and galleries, were undertaken by the New Material Research Laboratory, led by internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Sugimoto Hiroshi and architect Sakakida Tomoyuki. The new architectural design demonstrates the ingenuity of uniting centuries-old materials and building techniques with modern architecture, creating a space where tradition takes modern experiences to a higher plane. It's a 10-minute bus ride from the bus terminal in front of Atami Station. We visited the National Treasure Red and White Plum Blossoms Screen, which is held every February. This is a masterpiece by Ogata Korin, which you can see in textbooks and on stamps. The vivid colors and bold composition are truly wonderful. If you purchase tickets online, you can get a discount.

This is an art museum run by the World Messiah Church.
The World Messiah Church can be read as either 'Sekai Kyuseikyo' or 'Sekai Messiahkyo', and both readings seem to be acceptable, just as Japan can be read as either 'Nihon' or 'Nippon'.
Mr. Mokichi Okada was well versed in art, and was an unusual intellectual for a founder of a new religion.
As a result, even the sects that branched off from it have produced first-class art museums, such as the Miho Museum and the Hikari Museum.
The World Messiah Church strongly promoted hand-laying therapy, and hand-laying has become the most important ritual in all the sects that branched off from it.
This museum is wonderful in that it displays first-class art pieces in a sophisticated way.
It also focuses on food and drink, and there are some excellent restaurants, such as Toshi Yoroizuka, inside the museum.
New religions can cause various social problems.
However, art can also contribute to society by displaying first-class artworks to the general public, as this museum does, or by educating society by raising philosophical questions, as Joyu Fumihiro does.

I went here the day after a trip to Atami for a hot spring. It's a privately-built museum, but the building and exhibits are magnificent. You drive up a steep hill to the top of Atami Mountain. The view is also amazing. The kaleidoscope display is perfect for Instagram.

For people unaware of the meaning of "MOA", it is the "Moakichi Okada Association", not "museum of art." MOA is a Japanese "new religion" that believes in natural foods, laying of hands, and mostly making its founder rich. Some of that money went to an extensive art collection on display at this expansive, expensive museum.
Due to the religious affiliation, I was initially reluctant to attend. But my wife was in Tokyo for a Japanese ikebana conference, and their rimpa style arrangements are originally based on the Korin artwork on display here, so she had to attend, which meant I had to attend.
Despite my reluctance, I'm very glad I came. The Korin exhibit was incredibly beautiful and the setting of museum in the hills over Atami is magnificent. We were there in late February in time for the blooming plum trees. A few weeks later will be an explosion of cherry blossoms, and that alone will be worth the trip.

Visited there on a hot humid summer day. Surely you can hide from it at that spacious museum. The number of exibitis is not that big but worth seeing.

Museum has the most amazing escalators in the world...you will understand after you ride...and ride...and ride them. Art exhibits are changing and they have a good permanent collection too. They have a restaurant inside which has excellent Japanese vegetable curry. Outside you can walk into a section of old Japanese houses and one of them houses a soba restaurant which is excellent. There is another house with Japanese sweets and another house where you can have traditional Japanese green tea or macha to drink with a small sweet. Amazing views. There is also a natural food store with lots of small items you can buy too. The gift shop in the museum often has interesting items too.

I was first taken to visit Atami with some friends from Tokyo. We travelled by train to this tiny seaside town during the cherry blossom season, perfect. At first glance the museum is somewhat stark, very impressive, but outwardly rather cold. The entrance has long escalators which take one into the depths of the museum. Much of the artwork on display concentrates on Japanese and some Chinese, including exquisite pottery and beautiful objet's d'art. The serenity of the interiors makes one slow down and absorb the beauty of the unique works of art. As you surface from the depths of the museum the view from this vantage point is startling, quite superb, with far reaching views out over the bay at Atami. As the day was hot we wandered into the tea house in the Japanese garden where we enjoyed the typical green tea and the acquired taste of mochi cakes. I was fortunate visiting with Japanese friends as they were able to introduce me to artifacts that otherwise I may have missed. I long to return as there is so much more to discover.

岡田茂吉氏が蒐集した、主に中国や日本の東洋美術、あるいは東洋美術から世界に派生した作品が展示されている美術館です。
展示の多くが陶磁器と水墨画の掛け軸であり、そのほとんどが14世紀から18世紀にかけての近世～近代の作品です。時代や作者、作られた場所等の系統立てた展示方法、というわけではありませんが、決して雑多な展示というわけでなく、展示室の空間を巧みに活用しているため、静謐な雰囲気を漂わせています。逆に作品間の関連性をあまり表していないからこそ、各展示の作品そのものとしての美しさや価値を見出そうとしているのかもしれません。
国宝や重要文化財も多数展示されています。一部は撮影禁止の展示品もありますが、多くの場合で撮影可能（但し三脚等のカメラの固定器具やフラッシュは禁止）です。展示ケースには、反射を極力抑えたガラスが使用されているため、鑑賞スペースと展示スペースの境界が分かりづらくなっています。反射を意識せず作品を鑑賞できるメリットはありますが、鑑賞時にガラスに頭等がぶつかりやすくなっているので注意が必要です。
展示されている作品だけでなく、この美術館は、建物そのものも素晴らしい構成となっています。高台に設けられた美術館であり、入口から長いエスカレーターを使って昇降します（エレベーターもあります）。昇降の途中にある円形ホールでは、半球体の天井にプロジェクション・マッピングが映されており、それだけでもこの美術館の目玉の美術作品を思ってしまうくらいです。他にも、ガラス張りの空間、大理石の床や壁が非常に上質な空間を醸し出しており、熱海の絶景を楽しむことが出来ます。加えて美術館の敷地内には日本庭園があり、庭園内には茶菓子が楽しめる茶店もあります。

一方で、高台に築かれた美術館であるため、美術館内だけでも（日本庭園含め）アップダウンの激しい場所となっていますが、熱海駅から美術館にアクセスする上でも同様のことが言えます。熱海駅から徒歩で行けなくはない距離ですが、とにかく坂を上る必要があり、一部傾斜が急なところがあります。本数は少ないものの美術館へ行くバスもありますので、来館の際は車移動の方がいいでしょう。

Most of the exhibits are ceramics and ink and wash hanging scrolls, and most of the works are from the early modern to modern periods, ranging from the 14th to 18th centuries. Although the exhibition is not organized by period, artist, or place of creation, it is not a chaotic display, and the skillful use of the exhibition space creates a tranquil atmosphere. On the contrary, the exhibition does not show much relationship between the works, which may be the reason why visitors can find the beauty and value of each work in the exhibition itself.
Many national treasures and important cultural properties are also on display. Although photography is prohibited for some of the exhibits, it's possible to take photographs in many cases (however, camera fixing devices such as tripods and flashes are prohibited). The exhibition cases are made of glass that minimizes reflections, making it difficult to tell the boundary between the viewing and exhibition spaces. While this has the advantage of allowing visitors to view artworks without being aware of reflections, it also makes it easier for visitors to bump their heads against the glass, so care should be taken when viewing.
In addition to the artworks on display, the museum is also wonderfully structured as a building in itself. The museum is located on a hill, and a long escalator takes visitors up and down from the entrance (there is also an elevator). In the circular hall on the way up, a projection mapping is projected on the hemispherical ceiling, which alone is enough to make one think of the museum's centerpiece artwork. The glass-walled space, marble floors and walls create a very high quality space where visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of Atami. In addition, there is a Japanese garden on the museum grounds, and in the garden there is a teahouse where visitors can enjoy tea sweets.
As described above, the museum is not only a facility that exhibits art works, but also a space designed to allow visitors to spend a relaxing time in the building itself or outdoors in the Japanese garden, making it an art museum that one should definitely visit at least once.
On the other hand, since the museum is built on a hill, there are many ups and downs in the museum (including the Japanese garden), and the same can be said for access to the museum from Atami Station. It is not impossible to reach the museum on foot from Atami Station, but it's necessary to go up the hill anyway, and the slope is steep in some parts. There are buses that go to the museum, albeit infrequently, so it is better to drive to the museum.

This museum is nestled on a hillside, in a beautiful forested setting with great views. Wonderful exhibits. Reminded us of the Getty campus in LA. Also, lovely Japanese garden and tea houses. If you want to have a full meal get to the restaurant earlier than the published closing time. They were out of the meals we wanted and although the food was fine, we ended up with a bunch of miscellaneous items the chef had available. Also, there apparently are live kabuki theater performances. If we had known, we would have scheduled our visit for that day. Unfortunately, we missed it and it looked like it would have been awesome in the small intimate theater there.

The building is a magnificent piece of architecture. While this was indicated in prior reviews, it was much more impressive than I imagined. Somewhat like the Getty in Los Angeles but with sweeping views of the Pacific. In terms of the art, it depends to some extent on what is being displayed. When we visited, the exhibition was an original edition of Hiroshige's 53 stations of the Tokaido. If TA had 6 stars, I would give it for this exhibit. The museum has many masterworks of Japanese Art. You should check the site to see what is on display. There is also a recreation of the home of Ogata Korin, Read the other reviews below for a good many helpful suggestions, if you chose to visit.

MOA美術館のバス停から入口まではすぐ目の前ですが、そこから入館するまでにはエスカレーターに乗りますが15～20分くらいかかると思います。10時に入館するには、熱海駅前に9時30分にタクシーに乗ってもぎりぎりです。しかも、エスカレーターをひたすら歩くか走らなければ間に合わないでしょう。余裕をもって9時20分にはタクシーに乗りましょう。バスは、時刻表を調べないといけませんが9時15分までに乗られることをお勧めします。
