This is one of, if not the most, beautiful castle in Japan. It's very picturesque and as eager as I was to enter I was compelled to spend time outside taking photos first. The castle is very imposing alongside it's moat and it's worth taking a walk around the perimeter either before or after you enter. The inside is intriguing... More

Enjoyed a lovely afternoon in Matsumoto. First time visit and positively surprised by this charming place. Lot's good places to visit while enjoying lunch at Taiman.

This was an easy side trip from Nagano. It was about a 15 minute walk from the train station. There was a small building at the entrance that offered a complementary English-speaking tour guide. Our guide really made the visit worth while. We learned so much more than we would have touring on our own. The castle is quite majestic... More

It was really very majestic and beautiful. Really great to finally see this in person... Stood by the moat and took lots of pictures slightly after the closing time and when the sun was setting, the castle was shining in gold... Amazing, just amazing... The only thing that I didn't enjoy that much was the exhibit in the main keep...... More

Beautiful grounds and great historically significant buildings. Also a museum is part of the experience giving the history of the area.

This castle is definitely a national treasure! The self guided tour of the castle and grounds was very informative. The inside of the castle is kind of bare, but that's not a surprise as it was used as a fortification. There was a gentleman dressed as a samurai walking around, which was a lot of fun come picture time. I... More

Park outside the castle is the best place you can have full view of Matsumoto Castle, you may also grab coffee sit on the bench & enjoy the peaceful moment. We paid entrance fee to visit the castle & not many tourists during our visit, pretty interesting inside the castle & they keep everything very well. Nothing much to do... More

Only castle I've visited on 3rd trip to Japan- my preference is shrines, temples & nature spots. It was a good visit-well worth a couple of hours exploration.

We happened to go on the 3rd Jan - Matsumoto Castle "Gate Opening" Ceremony and event. There were people dressed up as ninja, warrior and geisha for photography opportunity as well as some performances and games. It was fun to visit the castle in a festive way. If you want to experience some traditional fun atmosphere, check out the event... More
