Natadera is absolutely gorgeous, a hidden gem in Ishikawa that's surprisingly easy to access, even for a foreigner. A scheduled stop on the Kaga Onsen/City tourist bus circuit (catch it easily from the Kaga JR train station), be sure to spend an hour or two wandering the grounds. Its three claims to fame (besides being a beautiful park) are being both a Shinto and a Buddhist temple, as well as being a place where the famous classical poet Matsuo Basho is known to have stopped. In fact, Basho carved a haiku (with his own hand, I'm told) on a stone that is prominently displayed along one of the walks. There are little temples and shrines all over the valley and throughout the park, but there is a large temple complete with a grand (and enormous) Buddha near the entrance--and not only that, there are fascinating caves hollowed in the hill above a swan-inhabited lake, and when it's not snowy or very wet, visitors can actually climb up the hills to visit and pay respects to the kami-sama who inhabit the hollows.
Allow two hours to walk around the park; it is possible to spend anywhere from 45 minutes to half a day, depending on your interests and schedule. After your visit, visit one of the restaurants near the parking lot, where eager matrons will encourage you to eat or buy or both. Afterward, ride the shuttle bus to one of the museums in Kaga, or even better, relax at one of the onsen (hot spring / spa) in town.

We were driving from Kanazawa to Kaga and decided to take the opportunity to visit some of the more remote shrines.
We had no expectation, yet it turned to be a real surprise!
Although it didn’t have the scale of a lot of the shrines in Japan, it did give us the tranquility and peacefulness. Big moss bed under all the big trees, main shrine hidden in a cave, and observatory deck to view all the different coloured autumn leaves that made this little shrine a real hidden gem.
Highly recommended!

I feel lucky to have seen this place in my lifetime. As you can see by most pictures, the autumn leaves in November are breathtaking. On a whim I purchased some dried candied apple slices from the vendor right outside the temple and it was so good! I have to admit that I'm dreaming of it now wishing had bought more than one bag.

This place is worth a side-trip if you are in the area. It's very unique compared with many other temples. I live in Kyoto and often go to temples and don't get "templed-out" so I have seen my fair share over the past 17 years or so.
It was definitely great to spend a lot of time in a big complex without many people around. Very peaceful & relaxing. The above reviews cover the other details.

We rented a small car for about Y6000 and headed to Natadera at the beginning of November, and it fortunately turned out to be the perfect time to see the fall colours. Although it was raining, in some ways it made it more beautiful, and probably helped to keep people away, so we almost had it all to ourselves. The design and colours were off the charts. I have lived in Japan for over 25 years, and this is certainly one of the most unique and beautiful temples I have ever visited.
You can climb to the top of the rock on one side, or the lookout on the other, and both offer incredible views.(Please have a look at my pictures.)
Within easy access from Kanazawa, and very highly recommended - especially in late October/early November (although I would imagine that dusted in snow it would also be very beautiful).

This beautiful place is well worth a visit. It's a large unkempt natural site with many temple buildings and things to discover in the undergrowth. I spent about 2.5 hours exploring and relaxing there.
Standard entrance 600yen, 800yen includes access to an extra tranquil garden.
I took the train from Kanazawa to Awazu (40mins, 570yen). From Awazu there is an infrequent Nata-Dera bus (15mins, 320yen)

Built by the great monk Taicho 1300 years ago. The principal deity of Natadera is the 11 headed, 1000 handed kannon.
Natadera remains a park that celebrates nature. 11 different places and buildings are throughout.

At the entrance, there seems to be no different of a usual temple visit. But once inside, the view was fascinating. Pictures say a thousand word but to appreciate the beauty, drop by for a visit to see by your own eyes

This temple complex was simply fantastic, sights are spread out over very beautiful and tranquil grounds. We visited on friday and there were hardly any visitors, which made out visit even more special, even though september is not the optimal for visit, as there are lots of maple trees (in autumn this temple will be simply gorgeous) and even some sakuras in the back near the pond.
Make sure to buy tickets to adjacent garden, it is small, but lovely. You have to enter it through the main temple near the entrance.
Highly recommended visit if you are in the area (easily doable as day trip from Kanazawa)

高齢の両親の旅行を考えています．両人ともに膝が悪いです．那谷寺観光ではアップダウンなどはどうでしょうか？口コミの中には足場が悪いとの記載もありましたので，心配しています．

全てを歩いた訳ではありませんが、完全なバリアフリーとは言えませんが、車椅子で移動して、段差や階段のみ介助して差し上げたら如何でしょう。 支え合う瞬間があるって障害者にとって幸せ感じますよ。 by車椅子オヤジ
