Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a very quiet Shinto Temple, easy walk from the station (10-15 minutes) walk. A long the lane leading to the temple are old Japanese house. The temple is free and very nice surrounding. Quiet as not too many tourist visit it. Mostly local Japanese tourist come to pray. There is museum/exhibition hall at the entrance of the temple that shows Takayama Festival Floats. Worth a visit.

Popped in at this shrine as it was just behind the floats exhibition hall. Very pretty setting. They were obviously preparing for something special as loads of flower arrangements and bonsai on display . Nice and quiet mostly Japanese going to pray.

We visited just before 6pm and it was so lovely and certainly not ‘just another shrine’. Really beautiful and lovely walk through streets to get there. There wasn’t anyone else there (early April). We continued on the Kitayama walking track included on the Takayama walking map.

I went on the hike from the forrest ( castle park) side and after I hiked up for 20 mins, I met some japanese who told me I need at least another 30 mins to cross the park and get on the road with the temples. As it was almost 17:00 and I was alone, I did not want to end up in the forrest at dark with bears ( it‘s better to be at least 2 people talking loud so bears stay away), I went back to the old town and went all the way to the other side of the walk across the temples. There it is on a road parallel to the main road, crosssing through temples lined up next to each other and it‘s a simple walk, not a hike. The last temple ends up at the beginning of the forrest.

Surrounded by nature a peaceful place. It was ruined by Italian tourists speaking in loud voices ruining it for everyone else. People forget that shrines are places of worship and you need to respect that. I noticed this a lot in Japan that some tourists had no respect for the fact that these are places of worship and were speaking loud , laughing and standing on altars. On more than one occasion I had to really hold my mouth not to tell off people. Near the float exhibition museum.

While Japan hosts a number of temples and shrines, this one is not to be missed. It is surrounde by the most beautiful forested area. It is serene and peaceful. And welcomes all kinds of prayers and mantras.

Takayama was completely dead quiet with the exception of this shrine on one such Saturday afternoon. Apparently this shrine is in the line-up for tour buses, so we had to deal with people blocking the wooden gate at the top of the stairs when we got there. Was happy to get my temple stamp here, which was in window of the office building on the ground level of complex, which is otherwise off-limits to visitors. Very steep stairs to next tier of temple buildings. Not accessible to strollers/wheelchairs. Giant torii gate by the river was the first clue to location of this temple. Shopping/mercantile street in Edo style buildings between torii gate and temple had nice ambiance, but a lot of shops were not open.

This shrine complex is located just behind the popular Takayama Festival Floats museum (and that's why we visited it :-).
There's nothing special to see or do here, it's like any other shrine - peaceful and spiritual. But, the rural and forest setting makes it a little more ... tranquil. When we were there last summer, there were very few people around and the place felt serene. The highlight was the walk up the steep stairs on the right side of the main temple. They lead to some sort of old fire station building or memorial, which is completely surrounded by tall trees and the forest. Very moody and calming.

Se puede reservar con anticipación? La reserva es sólo telefónica? En el teléfono , hablan inglés o italiano?
Written 11 June 2015
Saludos
