Yamada Tenmangu Shrine is one of the three great Tenjin shrines in Nagoya. The deity worshipped here is Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. Plum blossoms appear frequently in Sugawara no Michizane's waka poetry. The famous poem he wrote when he was demoted to Dazaifu is "If the east wind blows, let the plum blossoms give off their fragrance. Even though I have no master, do not forget spring." I also like the poem he wrote when he was five years old, "Plum blossoms are like the crimson color, I want to touch them to my cheek." It is said to be a childlike poem that expresses simple, honest feelings, but the subtle precocious atmosphere that permeates it is irresistible. White and red plum blossoms are beginning to bloom in the grounds of Yamada Tenmangu Shrine. The beauty of the plum blossoms that can be admired at Tenmangu Shrine is exceptional.
