Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Loved our tour! The people were so welcoming and happy to answer any questions about their lives. Loved visiting the school and the children, although we had to remind the guide to take us there (even though we were told that was part of the tour). Only complaint was it felt a little rushed and the market is totally 'overwhelming' to the point we had to ask our guide to apologise and leave, as we were bombarded with so many stalls, we just couldn't buy something from each and every one, even though we would have loved to. A bit pricey also. In the end we felt it was a bit of a money grab. Please take some books and things for the children if you visit, they will be your highlight! It was still an entirely true incredible African experience. 🦁 🦒 🐒 🐃

One of our favourite experiences in Zambia. Excellent charming guide able to answer all our questions. Fascinating history and continuing culture. Sustainable buildings and lifestyle. Post covid the village needs more visitors and they are clearly poor but remain polite friendly and cheerful.
Goods artisan craft market with best prices we found in 3 weeks in Zambia.

Its an option for travelers seeking local traditional things. But to pay 50-60usd for walk thru bunch of huts in +40C is not worth it...

After the Falls viewing this is a must if only to meet the local sales guys! Yes, mixed feelings. We bought a couple of really nice things. My wife said I should have bargained more. But I really wanted to inject a little cash into the local economy to feel good about myself. They have a schlepper called Bright who has an endearing personality and got me into a conversation about English soccer teams. Then I was hooked. Then the next guy along the row of stalls used begging. I succumbed. Oh well, we have some handsome locally made items. I think.

After previous visits to villages, (by no means touristy) in other parts of Africa, such as in Burkina or Guinea Bissau, Mukuni does afford visitors a glimpse of village life. Of course the locals want to sell their handicrafts, (some of which make useful gifts - and always at prices comfortably below those of shops and airport boutiques - provided you bargain a bit), but people are friendly, not too pushy and the village is surprisingly natural, in an attractive setting, and by no means over-exploited.

We visited the village during our stay in Livingstone, we hired a local taxi cost was $20 return, taxi driver waited while we toured the village which took approx.75mins.
We were shown around the village by a guide, she explained the everyday life of the village people..we were allowed into a family home to see inside and see what family life was like.
We were unable to see local crafts being made as there was a funeral that day of a village resident.
The village needs more tourists to help support ..should you decide to go ..pens, pencils, exercise books, things for the children will be greatly appreciated.

So much of what is seen around the Falls seems very touristy, and I was longing to understand more about life away from the tourist attractions. While my guide also helped me visit Chinotimba, the non-tourist living area on the edge of Vic Falls, his grandffather had come from this village and he suggested a visit. Coming from Vic Falls, you pay the taxi from the border ($15) and then pay the village an honorarium for welcoming you ($10). A guide (in our case, a very lovely lady who explained so much) takes you through the compounds, which have apparently existed for 700 years. She explains the legends of the chiefs (there is a male and female) and, There is a tree under which Livingstone apparently met the then-chief. if you're courageous, you can try the local homemade beer (warm and a bit mealy) and a stronger brew that tastes a little like "moonshine." At the end, you are escorted to the community center where all the men display their wonderful crafts. I was glad I waited to look at all before making purchases--there is a stunning array of products. It is also customary to tip the guide.

I was lucky enough to work in Mukuni village for 2 weeks with the locals.
I saw a number of tourists whilst I was there and think the trip provides a good insight into a true African Village.
Yes the locals want to sell you their products, but they are not really pushy and will take no for an answer. They are friendly towards tourists and I would definitely recommend a visit.

There was no need to join any tour for this and we simply took a taxi there. Upon entering with a fee USD5@, a guide from the village came out and guided us around. We found her indifferent, seems wanted to finish as soon as possible.
Anyway, we met quite many kids in the village who are pure and lovely. We had brought with us some biscuits and pens and gave them via the guide.
It's a short visit no more than 1 hour including the shopping time at the entrance. There were many handcrafts at good price.

We are very interested and eager to know more about the cheetah experience. Where did you see this? We leave soon 8-18 for Vic Falls. We would appreciate knowing more about this or riding an elephant.
Thank you so much!

Hi, how much is a taxi from Livingstone to Mukuni? Once you take a taxi, do you need the driver to wait for you to take you back? how much does it cost if the driver waits for you? thanks!
Written 21 February 2017
Taxi is usually $20-$40 in USD depending on your location roundtrip and they can wait for you. You can contact one of our favorite taxi drivers, Lubasi, to discuss at 260977438197.

The trip is well worth the visit. Its extremely interesting and the people are informative and pleasant. I visited this village in April 2016 twice. I was very impressed with the operation.
My husband and I are now attending to helping the village in any way we can. Problems ensure with finding descent shipping rates for sending items for helping the community.
We plan on visiting this village again in 2017.

I can't offer you much encouragement. I have a friend whose daughter and family are missionaries in that area and she has not been successful in finding reasonable shipping rates. They take what they can when they visit.
High shipping cost are more than likely why organizations such as Samaritan's Purse have their own means of shipping gifts and supplies.

Location compared to Vic Falls? Cost? How to get there?

It was about 20 minutes drive away from the hotels near the Falls on the Zambia side (Avani/Royal Livingstone). I took a trip through Bushtracks Africa, but cannot remember the price, but do remember that it was worth it in my opinion......

How do I book a visit to Mukini Village for my husband and self when staying in Livingstone in July? How many hours (including travel time to/from hotel to village) should we allow?
Written 3 April 2015
Hi you can just ask a taxi driver to take you there - when you arrive someone will be waiting to welcome tourists who would like a tour. It's free but you should leave a tip.
