Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First off, we live here in Hoi An and my wife is a Vietnamese blogger and professional photographer about food and lifestyle (indiechine.com). She normally gets paid quite well, but in the case of Xu Dang Trong she offered to do a photo shoot in exchange for some of their amazing handicrafts because we love this place so much and would have spent some of her earnings here anyway!
(One side note - about 6 months ago we bought some small item here. After we left the sales clerk remembered that she forgot to apply the sale price. For about a month the sales staff and management googled us, talked to other people in the community that might know us and finally found someone we knew who had our phone number, just to let us know to come back for a refund of the difference in price. This was for just a couple of dollars by the way. So if you know a bit about doing business here in Vietnam you'll know that this is an almost unfathomable level of integrity. Nothing against the other stores, since they're doing business like everyone else here, but wow! What an excellent way to win customer loyalty!)
Xu Dang Trong is unique in Hoi An, a real oasis of legitimate Vietnamese and Vietnamese ethnic minority handicrafts and art. It's easy to miss because there looks to be just a stage and occasional shows in the front of the place, but go through the front area, past the very lovely open-air cafe, and into the shop (2 levels) to see the handicrafts. Of particular note are the pottery, dyed fabrics using beeswax, Hmong and other ethnic beaded and quilted fabrics and traditional papercrafts.
We've outfitted our house here with a wide variety of things from Xu Dang Trong and our friends who just opened a resort here also used this shop to decorate their villa in high colonial-era style.
If you are lucky enough to be here when Xu Dang Trong is hosting a traveling group of ethnic weavers or other craftspeople you'll enjoy some truly amazing handicrafts at a very low price compared to value. In fact, we sometimes feel a bit guilty buying items that obviously took someone a week to make for less than $20, but actually Xu Dang Trong provides some of the best fair trade pay back to its suppliers, unlike many other places in Vietnam.
So don't be fooled by a storefront that looks more like a stage. Do like the locals do and park your bike out front and walk right in towards the back where all the good stuff is. Or stop in the cafe on the way to the back and get a cup of coffee to power you for a nice legitimately Vietnamese handicraft shopping experience, unique in this ancient city that unfortunately has too many t-shirt vendors and other purveyors of tourist stuff.

Tuong Art is a long tradition of the Vietnamese. Every character on the stage draws a mask to symbolize the character of the character they are performing. Each color on the mask symbolizes the personality and role of the character. White face (beautiful face, calm personality), red face (brave man, mature), face (ugly face, hot tempered), black face (dark face) The red markers are reddish-brown, the reddish or reddish green is the diver's), the moldy face, the plow face (the posterior, the liver). You can draw on existing patterns or create your own character. We have a painter who will guide you to paint a mask for decorating with full of Asian culture that you will not forget after your trip to Hoi An.

Yes, get there early so you have the seat at the start of the music. About 15 more minutes or more before is scheduled to start. Also go to the back of the venue to see how silk lanterns are actually made. You can also buy there

Perhaps my perception would have been better had I gone at the right time. I did try to ascertain when the much talked about performance was to be; however, did not come across anyone who could help comfirm it. There is of course an opportunity to gain insight into the architecture of the interior of this traditional structure however there were other places that I thought did better.
I found the displays disappointing and that aside from the silk scarves there was nothing that was noteworthy to consider that reflected the authenticity of the native folk art .

During a tour of the Ancient Town we watched a traditional music show in Hoi An. There were local artists singing, dancing and playing traditional instruments. The show went for approximately 30 mintues and was well worth the time spent. The Vietnamese local artists should be proud of not only how much talent they show but what a beautiful performance they presented,

Of the 22 sightseeing places in Hoi An Old Town this is far and away the best.
Like a lot of things in this region the arrangements are not always clear ;-)
If you have bought the (5) Old Town tickets you can use one to see the show at either 10.15 or 15.15 you just have to turn up and sit down and take a seat. The seats are limited so it's worth getting there a little early if you want to sit near the front. The show lasts about 40 minutes and is a story told through music and dance. There is also a lucky draw for a prize !!!
Apart from the performance there is an arts centre at the back which has all kinds of locally made items
It's wonderful - enjoy !
There are shows at the new theatre but you have to buy tickets for that.

This is an excellent free show in the old town and gives a taster of some of the different musical traditions of the region. I particularly liked the singing "bingo" caller which reminded me of the Spanish Gordo Lottery in Spain, the numbers of which are sung out by choir girls and boys!

Get here early. If you think you will get a seat 5 mins before the schedule cultural performance you will be wrong. Was standing room only. Terrific dance/music show. Highly recommend.

You can stop by here with your ticket to enter Hoi An ancient city. Although a lot of the sites within the old city were disappointing we found this performance to be very soothing. The musicians playing are very talented and the dancers are fun to watch. If you use your entrance ticket anywhere this would be my highest recommendation. I was wowed.

To compliment Hoi An's charm, Xu Dang Trong has daily music and art performances. There's a lady that explains each performance beforehand so you don't get lost in translation. I think it's worth a visit in addition to the various activities in Hoi An.
I came at 10:05 to watch the 10:15 show and it was full. I suggest coming earlier to get good seats.

I see this and wasn't sure if this was Vietnamese or Chinese dance?

They are performing the traditional music and dance of Vietnamese culture. It's a bit different with Chinese dance.
