The desert fortresses of ancient Khorezm lie mostly in Karakalpakstan and the area's traditional name gives a stark indication of what lies beneath the desert sands. To explore the fortresses properly you will need a bit of time, as there is quite some distance between them....More

After visiting Ayaz Kala, it’s normal to feel that you dont like this place much as you just encountered the greatness of Ayaz Kala! Entrance fee is required also here for 4,000 som. Go to Janpik Kala also if you have a chance. It is...More

Quite a lot of walls still remain. This is in stark contrast to the magnificent buildings of ancient Uzbekistan and to beautiful intricately decorated Madrassas and mausoleums. But perhaps that is why this place is interesting. Whether it is worth subjecting yourself to pain and...More

Ancient castle is still impressive, some parts are in good condition. Not far from Ayzqala, other castle on the way between Nukus and Khiva.

If you have difficulty walking, this fortress is a good bit easier to enter than Ayaz Kala. This is another 2000+ year old fort. Somewhat restored, once you are up there, you can see the difference between the officers' area and the soldiers' part.

Truly curious ruins of a once magnificent fortress. It might be inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list once so it's really worth seeing. However it's better to be visited with someone local who knows where it's located as it's quite in the middle of nowhere.
