That is the most characteristic place in Samarkand. In the peak season that is full of tourists and Uzbek wedding couples. Yes, there is the wedding palace nearby and they love to have a walk and photo session with the photogenic buildings.

Even if built within 200 years of each other, this complex of three Madrasah in Rageston are real work of art and example of the great investment that Uzbek rulers put in the Study of religion, science and arts. One of the wonders of Muslim...More

Registan Square is the highlight of a trip to Uzbekistan. Any one of the buildings would be enough. The three together are amazing. The life of Ulugh Beg is fascinating. he was a poet, scientist and more. He charted the skies before america was discovered.

The three Madrasas were a stunning part of the visit. I have hardly seen a more impressive scenery like the registan with these buildings, built in competition to each other and forming an ensemble with a lot of details to be explored.

Having fought through Tashkent airport, the endless roadside checks and the roads (cart tracks), this seemed to make it all worthwhile for me. It was quite surreal and magnificent and pulled together the religion and architecture.

We visited a musical instrument maker and a master ceramicist. Great fun to watch the instrument maker play each instrument that he made from a complicated xylophone to a duotar (a two stringed guitar) to a flute to a drum. The ceramic tiles were also...More

Take time to enter every MAdrasa and stroll around...every corner of these ancient islamic universities can reveal a hidden treasure. Despite the fact that every courtyard is filled with bazar-like souvenir shops, you can still inspire the atmosphere of the past. Get into the shops...More

Yet another Madrases selling souvenirs, which they all do as the present government doesn't tile these places and fix them up for the Muslims to teach Islam to the children, the Madrases traditional use. I'm not saying they should, just saying they don't. The politics...More
