It's fascinating both as a museum and purely astonishing piece of architecture. The facade is mesmerizing. And the exhibit inside will give you a comprehensive set of information on Poltava's history with lots of curious artefacts. If I'd have to select only one museum in Poltava to visit, it would be this one.

The building itself is beautiful on the outside. Inside, there is a wide range of exhibits - historical, nature-related, folkloric, etc. Not all of them have descriptions in English, but many of them are straightforward. For a regional museum, it's quite good, found a few things that were quite interesting. Worth checking out.

This museum is a must see in Poltava no matter if you like ethnographic collections or not.
If you don’t fancy regional museums, have a look at its unique building in Ukrainian Art Nouveau style.
It was built in 1903-1908, to house the local government - Zemstvo of Poltava Gubernia (province). The architects were determined to step away from boring traditional pseudo-classicism or pseudo-renaissance solutions, and suggested adding the elements of Ukrainian folk art to the architecture. To support this idea, they launched a discussion in media not only in Poltava but even in Kyiv. At the end of the day, this concept has won, and Poltava Zemstvo building had become the first example of the new architectural style of Ukrainian Art Nouveau in the area. The building of Poltava Regional Museum is now listed in the Ukrainian Register of Architectural Monuments of the National Importance.
And if you do like regional history museums, make sure you visit the one in Poltava. It is one of the oldest museums in Ukraine, established back in XIX. Thanks to its richest diversified collection of over 300,000 show-pieces, represented by the departments of natural history, archaeology, ethnography, and several departments of history – from XIV up to XXI, it is by no means one of the best regional museums in Ukraine. Unfortunately, it lacks English signs, but many exhibits speak for themselves.
Also, in the park opposite the museum you will find what is considered one of the best non-iconic monuments to Taras Shevchenko – wonderful Ukrainian artist who had been made a national symbol for his poetry (that I personally don’t appreciate too much, unlike his paintings!). This monument by Ivan Kavaleridze, made in the Constructivism Art style with the elements of cubism, differs greatly from the traditional Shevchenko monuments you will see all over Ukraine.

I agree with prior reviewers that the building is fascinating and certainly worth a visit.
However, be prepared for a disappointment when you visit the collection inside.
Old-fashioned exhibition style, not many interesting artefacts and explanantions only in Ukrainian!

A can’t miss place. Put aside at least 2-3 hours to properly go thru this building. Covers all the archeological and historical history of Poltava and area. Minimal cover charge, $10 Ukrainian. Well worth the time.

Poltava has a very rich history, it was interesting to see, and know more about it, and to see how everything was in the past.

The Poltava Regional Museum is a gem inside and out. The tiles and architecture in and out are exceptional. Inside, I enjoyed the historical and natural history displays and there is certain types of 'traditional' artistry on display as well. There are displays of artifacts concerning the Chornobyl disaster and the Donbas situation also. I had an interpreter so I got more out of this than would have been the case otherwise.

It took us about an hour or more to make our way through this museum, which is very old and quite large. It has a wide variety of artifacts on display (not only local ones), some dating back many centuries. I will say that the taxidermy could have been done better, but overall it was very interesting and informative.
