Today around 1pm I went to see this mosque with the intention of visiting the inside. When I arrived, I saw an incredible quantity of shoes in the containers placed outside, which I had never seen outside a mosque. When I entered, the faithful were very dense, so dense that there would not have been room for me, not even to stand still. So I preferred to give up (and not disturb those praying).

Take a few moments to visit and imagine the encounters Rumi had with Shams while you're here. It will transport you back in time. I'm not sure Shams is truly buried here but it does not matter. His spirit is definitely alive.

The original of this mosque dates back to 16th century however, in the current building nothing is left from those days as the last renovation back in 1977 erased almost all its originality. Though the tomb and the mosque are named after Şems-i Tebrizi, the most influential disciple of Mevlana from whom Mevlana himself was abundantly influenced, the tomb inside does not belong to him. In fact no one knows when and where he died, but despite that common knowledge, people keep coming here to pray for the soul of Şems-i Tebrizi. The building itself is not as impressive as the other beautiful monuments of Konya, but it still worths a visit thanks to its spritiual position in the Mawlawi sect.

Shams-i Tabrizi mosque & tomb, One of the well-known sufis in muslim world who made a great effort to train Rumi in a spirutal way & method in 13th century, is located in the center of Konya city of which millions of his lovers pay a visit and pray to him after visiting Rumi & Mevlevi main lodge center. Shams-i Tabrizi was born in Tabriz in Iran today as part of the Azerbaijan in that time. He was educated in Tabriz first and he wanted to travel seeing the various countries and meeting new scholars & sufis. He was looking for someone to become close friend so he was told to meet with Rumi in Konya. When Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi and Shams-i Tabrizi met in Konya for the fisrt time, it was a great moment when two oceans joined. Rumi burned all his books as soon as he saw Sahms and became his student right away. Rumi and Tabrizi isolated themselves by talking and reading the mystic poems to train Mevlana . After a long time education and training Shams disappeared . Rumi's son, Sultan Valad, left Konya looking for Rumi and seven months after he found Shams and brought him back to Konya. Rumi and Shams began the lessons again but Shams was disappeared one night in 1247 and it was believed that he died. Nobody knows where he was buried and a lot of speculations are told about his tomb place. The place in Konya is symbolic grave beliving that Shams was killed in this area and over his grave a mosque was built later in 1510 during the Ottoman period.

Read the small book 'where two oceans meet' Listen to some reed music beneath the stars, sip tea and talk kilims and caravans in the local market place, start to feel history sitting by your side and gently leading you through a secret door to one of humankinds spiritual foundations.
Konya and this mosque especially, is a hot, high plains, dry city, with smog and bad traffic, but this makes it an experience of life. The market is good for hours (days) of local conversations, the traffic means walking (strolling) is the best way to see the shaded parks and alleyways. Visit at Ramadam and experience the restaurants, cafes and canteens all spring to life at dusk after prayers. Shams of Tabriz was all about experiencing life, go here to start. I travelled by bus from the coast, local busses are reliable and make regular stops at cafe's etc, you can continue on to Cappadocia from here easily and get to see some of the amazing landscapes of Turkey.

Mosques with tombs are fairly common. This one is special and deserves some attention and respect. The problem is that unless you are familiar with the tomb inhabitant's background it can be largley simply a visit to view the decro. This Tomb is quite lovely artitically.

If you know the story of Shams and Rumi, their friendship and great love for each other, then this place is a must-visit. The shrine is totally peaceful as not many people seem to come here. All the better, because it means you can sit here, meditate, and take in the serene atmosphere!
This place is located is about 10 minutes walk from the Mevlana Rumi museum. It is rather unassuming, so you may not be able to find it easily. Here are some directions. From Mevlana Museum, walk along the main road, Mevlana Caddesi, towards Aladdin Hill. About 500m to 600m down the road, you will see a largish mosque, which is called Serafettin Cami. There is a small, shallow fountain next to the main road, about 50m before Serafettin Cami. That is your sign. Turn right by the fountain. When you turn right, you should see about 100m away, a blue sign for the local police station, with "POLIS" written in white letters. Head towards that building. Beyond the police building is a tiny park with some trees. Walk about 100m, keeping your attention to the left. You should see a small fountain for washing and drinking. The entrance to the shrine of Shams (also written as "Sems") is just behind this fountain.
Beautiful, beautiful place. Do visit, and spend some time in this oasis of peace!

If you are in Konya it is because you are a lover of Mevlana (Rumi) as they call him here.
And if you are, you know that there would be no Mevlana without Shams.
But I strongly suggest you first visit the the Shrine of Mevlana, the so-called museum!
Then go and see Shams's tumb, the stark contrast of each.
As magnificent is Mevlana's, so simple and Zen this place is.
It reminds you that Shems was the Teacher, the traveller, the man who carried the secret.
This place calls for meditation, prayer and bringing to mind who Shems was and what he did and how one can benefit and evolve from his Teachings.

His place is just like him; A mystry that never cared for this world to unravel before.
While Mevlana's shrine still draws crowds, Shams RA's (said) place is aloof and self assured in its own way.
Perfect if you really want to spend some time with him.

When will Sems I Tebrizi Camii be open again after the restorations have finished?
Written 31 July 2019
Hi
Please I want to ask if we can visit the tomb at night?
Written 26 July 2018
Yes, it is true , the mosque is closed for renovations. But the park around it and the fountain is open day and night.
Does someone know how long restorations will take ? Rumi’s tomb is also closed for renovation, but the rest of Mevlana museum is open.

Camiye ulasim yolundaki engelli vatandaslara yonelik engellerin kaldirilmis oldugunu umut rediyorum.insana huzur veren yerlerin engelli vatandaslara engel olmamasini umut ediyorum.Belediye baskanina sevgilerimi sunuyorum.

maalesef ülkemizdeki birçok yer gibi bu alanda da engelli vatandaşlarımız düşünülmemiş. Zaten türbede ibadet de yapıldığı için özellikle namaz saatlerinde ziyaret çok zor oluyor
