Had some time to spare so took a visit to look around the Asansor as its listed as a "must do" attraction. If you are going by tram get off at Karatas tram stop then a short walk. I visited on a Sunday morning in winter so it was relatively quiet.
There was no charge to ride the Asansor (lift/elevator) and the view from the top was good but restricted as you cannot walk all the way around and is a small area with many others trying to take that special photo to upload immediately onto Instagram.
There is a small cafe there and a restaurant. Worth the trip for the view but 15 mins is all you need. I spent more time in one of the many cafes nearby.

I had some time to kill after visiting Kemeralti so I decided to check out Asansor. You can easily come here by walking from Kemeralti. It's around 15 minutes of walk. You can either take an elevator to go up or take long stairs. I did not even know about the elevator and google maps showed me to take stairs up the mountain. So stairs it was for me. I also saw another tourist taking the stairs. It seems google maps failed him too. :D
Before I went here I thought it would be some awesome view point where I would be able to sit back and relax for an hour or so. I was hoping a large plaza kind of thing with local vendors selling stuff and all. What I found was a small viewpoint which was fenced with very small space to stand and enjoy the view. Further, since it was so little space there were always some people interested in coming forward and take a better look that you cannot stand at the main viewpoint for more than 5 minutes.
There is a small restaurant here but I didn't try that. On the way back I used the elevator and realized that I only had to walk a few more steps for the right turn instead of taking the stairs.
Overall, I realized that you can get better view of Izmir from Kadifekale than here. But considering the locals in Izmir think that Asansor is one of the top attractions in Izmir, as a tourist you should not miss it otherwise you may be left with a feeling that you missed something very important.

The Tarihi Asansor is in fact an elevator and a view point in Izmir. It's pretty much out of the main tourist area, in the southwestern part of city. We were driving from Cesme so it was on our way, and we paid a visit.
The elevator (there are 2 of them) is free and takes you from the sea level street up the steep cliff. Up, there's a small cafe and viewing platform.
Views are really nice, you see the entire Izmir bay. Don't expect to see the city center from here.

Historical Elevator in the Karataş district of Izmir is one of the city's most admired historical spots. Usually used to avoid stairs in buildings, the elevator is used to shorten the distance between two districts in Izmir Konak. The 155-step staircase between these two neighborhoods, which has an elevation of 58 meters from each other, leaves its place to the Elevator in 1907. Today, this is one of the most beautiful sunset spots in the city.

Dario Moreno born and lived here before imigrated and have a famous song which is on play during your tip to upstairs at the historic elevator,No fee is taken as it was planned for the comfort of people climbing upstairs during the 19th century. 2 kms to Konak Square,a cafe and a clean restaurant,a selection of wines are cheap and perfect, main dishes for less than 10 Euros including a city view to the northern part of the city over the gulf of İzmir.

Asansor is worth seeking out. Fiinding the exact street it's on can be a little tricky. Built in 1907 by a local philanthropist to save people from having to walk the 155 steps that used to connect the two sections of the neighborhood, the lift tower is a sight to behold- a free-standing brick structure in front of a vine-covered rock face. There are two lifts that alternate between the ground floor and the "first floor," which is 40-50 meters up. Like many European elevators, the lift doesn't have "doors", which is a major plus in this case, because there are four or five "windows" on the way up that allow you to see out across Izmir Bay as you climb. Once at the top, there is an observation deck, a cafe, and the Asansor restaurant, known as one of the most romantic restaurants in the city.
We went to the restaurant for my birthday. Definitely make reservations if you want to go to the resturant, and arrive early so you have time to wander around and soak up the view. Our reservation was for about half an hour before sunset, which was a spectacular time to enjoy the view of Izmir Bay. The restaurant has a charming old-world feel to it, and even on a Tuesday night, there was live music that added nicely to the ambiance but was being played at a low enough volume that you could still converse without having to raise your voice. The food was all excellent, but be forewarned- each dish name and description is written in Turkish and the language of the country that the dish originated, so there were only a couple items listed in English. We ordered by selecting dishes that had a word we recognized, and were very pleasantly suprised by the results. Our calamari appetizer was particularly tasty- I'm pretty sure that squid had been swimming in the ocean earlier that day.
In summary, seek out Asansor, even if it's just to see the view.

One of the historical places of İzmir,Asansör tower has been built in the year 1907 by a jewish philantropist,Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu to render the difficulty for the elders, children and pregnant woman to climb the stairs due to the altitude difference between Mithatpaşa street and Halil Rıfat Quarter. When you come here, you should watch magnificent view. And free entrance to the elevator.

It's not just a lift making life easier for people who live in the neighborhood: it is a history, a magnificient panoramic view on Izmir, cute and affordable cafes and a restaurant, the beatiful neighborhood to walk downstairs, and all that with a nice touch of the beloved Smyrnian singer and composer, Dario Moreno's songs in the lift. A great spot of Izmir's city culture, built by the Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu. It is told that he had the idea of sponsoring its construction at the beginning of the 20th Century, when his beloved friend felt and broke his leg at the stairs on the steep cliff at this spot.
The lift is free to use, administrated by the municipality of Izmir.

I had my engagement party here and all I can say was the restaurant inside (the one in the old engine room) couldn't have been nicer. A bit like a castle inside it made for a warm evening. We shared the restaurant with a Greek family also having a festival. The place was perfect to treat the family and the photo opportunities from up top were fantastic especially at night. My little Jewish history upon the family (I'm a Jewish American marrying a Turkish Muslim) was that the place was built by a Jewish banker, to connect the Jewish community to the lower quarter and the coast.
It's really worth seeing as it's a nice slice of history and a wonderful venue for a nice view of the Izmir coastline at night.

I walked from the Swissotel which is close to Konak Pier to Asansor. The best way to see any city is to walk, there is so much to see, don't be afraid! A good tip is to set out from your hotel just after sunrise and arrive early at Asansor. If you are a couple go before sunrise, I was a solo female traveller. When I reached Asansor there was no one asking for a fare to enter the lift to the top. A young man exited the lift, the locals seem to have the advantage of using the lift for free. In my broken Turkish I asked if I could use the lift to reach the top, no problem at all. The view from the restaurant which was still closed was just amazing. I love Izmir, the gulf was beautiful the sun with its red and orange hue made such beautiful photos. All in all well worth the visit.

Hi! Is there an open parking available in the area?
Written 11 November 2018
Hi,
Unfortunatel parking is a problem but you can park in Konak and have a walk for 20 minutes or take a taxi. I would suggest you better go by public transport or taxi. Place is very busy in terms of traffic. Regards
