Poetic place

Blue-green waters and red land, a long road from sandy places to watery ones. Somehow like on the moon :)

Drive north of Erzurum on the D950 highway to see Tortum lake, but also breath-taking landscapes. Further north, there are Tortum waterfalls. Between the falls and the luttle town of Tortum, there are very old Georgian churches to be visited and very typical villages. That makes for a great afternoon!

It is about 10 kms in length and on a bright day the water can be turquoise in parts and more subdued colour in other parts. The surrounding mountains make for lovely views which seem to go on for ages when travelling past in a bus.

I visited this lake together with my friends on the way to Erzurum. As compared to lakes I've seen before, it has very steep shores... A nice sight overall, see the pic attached.

The lake is attractive, but the surrounding terrain is somewhat barren, and the fluctuating water level created a bathtub ring as at reservoirs. However, the waterfall at the outflow (north end) and the restaurants farther below make up for that. You can walk a little loop trail beside and below the waterfall, and even with low water in August it... More

The lake is nice, the view is wonderful and the water is a superb greenish blue. I did not try to bathe and I regret it. The lake can also be viewed from one of the many viewpoints along the road.

The color of the water is amazing. You also had a chance to swim, canoe or row a boat. There are some restaurants around with great scenery and delicious fish.
