If you take any of the day tours around Cappadocia you will probably get a photo stop overlooking this, but it's possible to immerse yourself in it if you're so inclined. Assuming you're based in Goreme, the best way to experience this valley is to get the local bus to Ucisme and walk back from there. As you enter you will see a sign telling you that the distance is about 4 km but the average time to do it is 3.5 (!) hours, which is not compatible with the "1 out of 3" difficulty rating they give it. It's a 2, easy. Occasionally you'll have to sit and slide, or walk in running water. To be immersed in this unique, surreal landscape is an unforgettable experience and I recommend it wholeheartedly, but it is not for the mobility impaired. PS Proper shoes (with grip) would be a plus but I did it in sandals.PPS Better to do this with a buddy than on your own - just ask around your hotel/hostel.

Another short stop at a lookout over Güvercinlik Vadisi (Pigeon Valley) in Uçhisar where you can see the rock formations that have pigeon houses cut into them. Pigeons often congregate here as well. It was interesting to hear about how the pigeon entrances were made removable to access the desired pigeon droppings. There is no cost to enter the lookout but near the edge there is a touristy love picture site at 10 Turkish Lira per person and an evil eye tree where people have bought and hang up the Turkish nazar amulets (which to me seems a waste of money). Good views though.

This valley has lots of unique rock formations with many pigeon houses.
It is interesting to learn from our Tour Guide that these houses were created by some early settler to provide a place for Pigeons to nest. Eventually Pigeons breeding are abundance in these areas, as their droppings were collected as fertilizer for crops.

There are some pigeons coming around us, waiting for food. There are pigeons feed available in nearby shop where visitors could buy to feed them.

There is no entry fee. Pigeon Valley stunning landscape with surreal sight of unique rock formations , coupled with tree decorations ,pigeons feeding & camel riding is indeed a great place to capture some memorable shots.

A site worth visiting while you are in Cappadocia!!!

There are several accesses to the so-called "Valley of the Pigeons". We undertook the one recommended by Maps about a kilometer from Uchisar Castle. Alternatively you will find a more accessible one just below the village castle. The entrance to the valley is free, there are several paths, not always well marked, that will take you through the entire valley for a total of about 5 kilometers. It is a Trekking not for everyone as some areas are quite steep but it is an incredible experience. We recommend the "Maps.Me" app that will allow you to download offline trails throughout Cappadocia including points of interest.

You can hike here, but come prepared with proper footwear. There's a steep climb down. If you just want to look over the valley or view the castle from afar, it's pretty doable. Of course there's also the option to feed the pigeons. There's also a paid lookout with the castle behind it; it's pretty inexpensive, though you can definitely get a view without the swing.

(Pigeon Valley) earned its name from the countless man made dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) that have been carved into the soft volcanic tuff. Since ancient times Pigeons have been used in the Cappadocia region for food and fertiliser for the infertile soil. While pigeons no longer play such an important role in the area, their rocky homes have still been maintained by locals and can be found atop rock pillars and inside excavated cave houses and churches throughout the region, however, they are particularly numerous in this valley. A great way to see Pigeon Valley is from above via a hot air balloon tour. Tours leave every morning just before sunrise so you will already be floating above the stunning landscape as the sun comes up.

another quick stop in Cappadocia that your tour group made. Our Tour Guide mentioned that these houses were created by some early settler to provide a place for Pigeons to nest. I love the different colors of the sand along the cliffs, a few shops are located here. There was a man with camels to take photos with for a fee across the street.

Pigeon Valley.
You can also see Uchihisar Castle from here.

But if you want to see Uchihisar Castle, it's much more powerful to see it up close.
I stopped by a little bit because I had time, but I thought I could have cut it here.

There is a large parking lot nearby where sightseeing buses stop, and it was very crowded with tour customers, so I think it is a Things to do for tours.

If you are driving, this will likely be on your way to Uchisar Castle so no reason not to stop.
Does not really take long, you could perhaps get away with a 15 min stop to look, take some photos etc unless you plan to hike.
If you are going to hike, bring water, supplies and you will come across some cave dwellings on the opposite side of the valley.

The views were amazing but we got lost a lot and it wasn't clear which path to take. It was also very slippery in places with loose stones which made it dangerous going downhill. We kept going wrong and finding paths that lead to nowhere with dangerous cliff edges. It's a shame the signage isn't better as it felt like we spent most of our time getting lost rather than taking in the scenery.
