Try it in the best way with Chez Galip
Aug. 2020
If you would like to learn everything about pottery you have to visit Chez Galip's studio and gallery. It's a great opportunity to explore step-by-step process of this art. Master Galip and his team provide you the secrets of techniques from clay mixing to decorating and phosphorization. Everyone can try it, doesn't matter are you beginner or professional. Both will surprised by masterpieces created by themselves.

Not easy access unless in a group tour or private car. We came from Göreme on public bus and alighted near the market and walked 1.5km into a quiet neighbourhood to reach the gallery. It was cold of course. The gallery had no other visitors except a small tour group however the staff quickly were able to distinguish we arrived on our own and were non-group visitors and kindly offered us hot tea to warm up. Saw a pottery demo which is quite nice, and was shown the workshop and the retail area. The master’s area is excellent, clear distinction of the quality and expertise of his work vs the regular area. Glow in the dark section is really wow. The quality of the master’s pieces were far greater than what I saw at Guray Müze earlier. We were shown around and left to browse without any pressure to buy, and of course was told if we were interested to purchase a good price can be offered. Prices are high, even after a discount but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. DHL Shipping is offered for a price but it is expensive so I preferred to hand carry. It was very well packed with layers of bubble wrap and secured tightly in a box. I was happy and very pleased with my selection , too bad Master Galip wasn’t around during our visit. The service and attitude of the chez Galip staff were really nice. We asked about the bus for the way back to Göreme and was very kindly assisted with our transportation. Overall very pleased and happy with this visit though would have been so much better to see the master himself.

Worth a visit!

We visited Chez Galip as part of a tour.
We were warmly welcomed with apple tea, which we sipped as a student potter made a demonstration in front of us.
We were then led into a sort of showroom which featured handmade ceramics articles, one more amazing than the other.
The best ones were those that glowed in the dark.
The prices were also reasonable considering they are handmade.
Worth a visit!

Visiting the hair museum - having nostalgia
Jul. 2019
It has been my favourite spot in Avanos since my childhood. My aunt used to take me there when I was there almost every summer. We had a chat with Galip abi and saw the new products and decorations. This time I took my kid there for the first time to start the same tradition. It was a surprise! We loved it.

We went to this place to see their famous ceramic. Very fortunate to meet the man himself. He is like a national artist. Very nice and friendly man. Very awesome crafts.

Had a great time here. Was left to browse unfettered but got lots of help from a nice local guy when I was ready to buy. Master Galip himself was friendly with everyone there, and he even brought out some wine for us to share at the end of my visit. Both the new and the vintage wares are spectacular.

Beautiful pottery and Unique Hair Collection

This place was featured in Atlas Obscura and was worth the extra effort to see. The cheapest option to get there from Goreme was by local bus. Only problem was it doesn't drop you off on the main drag, so we had to walk a mile. Which was fine since you get to walk through the neighborhood and see how people are living.
At Chez Galip we were shown a good pottery demonstration and looked through several rooms at the pottery. Then we got to see the collection of hair on the ceilings and walls. Quite impressive ! Very unique and my wife got to leave a locket of hair (sorry guys, but ladies hair only).

Interesting to see but quite over-hyped

Visited with our guide, who said this is the best pottery maker in Coppadocia. We told him we don't want to buy anything. So possibly due to that our pottery demo was by someone else and not Chez Galip.

Saw a flower vase made, similar to what we see elsewhere except that the pottery wheel was leg operated. Saw the collection, very beautiful. Specially the glow in dark ceramic.

Bought one small piece as didn't want to come out without buying given that they showed us the demo. Realised what we bought after 30% discount was exactly the same as available in shops in Istanbul at one sixth the price. The mark up price was 8x.

Guess they build up the profile and speak so much about Master Galip that you end up buying something at obnoxious prices.
