This is a must. We did a two hour ride starting at the bridge. Views are spectacular. Busy but such a great atmosphere. Very cheap and you can buy a ticket on the train. Trains are often delayed. The one we waited for was delayed by forty minutes. However, once it arrived the journey was very efficient! They don't stop for long so get on and off quickly.

Not a place to enjoy but somewhere to reflect in silence on the 100,000 people who lost their lives in the construction of the railway. "One death for each sleeper" is what the notices say. Not just the allies (Australian British, Dutch) but neighbours from Vietnam, Indonesia and Laos. The engineering is quite a feat too over difficult terrain; in fact the section outside the Kasai cave fell into the river the first time it was used.

This Death Railway has a lot of tourists. And there are beautiful places to take pictures. But during the day it will be very hot.

Firstly foreigners are charged 100 bts single, Thai pay 17bts. Your return ticket has to be purchased at Nam Tok, the turn around is 20 minutes. 1035 off Kanchanaburi arrive Nam Tok 1235. Departure is at 1255 and back in Kanchanaburi at 1448. The east side is mainly farms whist the west side will get the river. the 2nd half of the journey is the most scenic. The train is not air con,so windows down and wear glasses for the dust. Food vendors on the train for snacks and drinks and not expensive so eat and drink on board. Its abit like a preserved railway in the UK except there are only 3 trains each way every day, the train above mentioned is the one dont wait for the last one it might not come!!

This was a great train with airy, open carriages and a great atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our journey wending around the lush green blood-soaked and history-soaked hills!

The railway, the bridge, the museum and the cemetary make a wonderful and emotive experience. With just a little thought these things bring into focus a painful but important lesson from history. Although surrounded by tourist facilities somehow these four bright lights stand out with sensitivity, humility, bravery and poignancy. I think that this is a real world heritage site although not officially recognised as such.

By chance our taxi driver took us to board the train at Kanchanaburi central station. The station is not at all busy, perhaps 20 or 30 members of the public and 3 or 4 tourists milling around. There is a tourist ticket desk located at the entrance to the station staffed by 3 or 4 uniformed SRT staff, one staff member per tourist! You'll get led to the carriage and your seat with a personal touch, they even adjust your ceiling fan. The car will eventually be shunted to join the service coming up from Thonburi and then you are off ... first stop is the Bridge on the Kwai station where you'll be joined by large crowds of fellow tourists, packing into the previously serene carriage. The rest of the trip was lovely with some really fantastic views. Our taxi driver met us at the end of the line (Nam Tok (waterfall) Station) to take us back to the hotel ..... the train ride is a bit bumpy and on a hard seat.

We travelled back to Kanchanaburi by train after going to Hellfire pass and experienced passing over the wooden platform built by the POWs. It's hard to believe that it still exists especially after learning about booby traps and sabotage deliberately planted during the building process. This experience was a must for us as an important lesson in history and hoping to prevent such atrocities in future.

If you are in the area this one trip you must do once to feel the history and imagine what it must have been like in the WW2, 16000 allied prisoners and 90000 locals died in the contruction, the railway does not run through the worst parts of contsruction nowadays but a couple of viaducts will give you an idea.
