- RIchard035Northwood, United Kingdom1,353 contributionsSmall night marketChiang Rai night market is quite small - just a couple of streets. It is nowhere near as large and impressive as night markets in other cities (e.g. Chiang Mai). Chiang Rai is really a base for visiting attractions in the area rather than being a city to visit itself.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 January 2024
- TSinParisParis, France2,235 contributionsGood place for dinnerNice night market. Yes it is touristy but the food is good and there is a mix of tourists and locals. There was live music and Thai dancers the night we were there. The vendors were friendly and helpful - not pushy. Reasonable prices.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024
- 888travelKaron, Thailand513 contributionsWorth going just for the foodThe actual night market is so-so but there is a big open-air area with yellow tables and yellow chairs with food stalls around the edge at such cheap prices. It’s packed every evening. A great place to meet friends and enjoy all sorts of food and drink and live music.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 January 2024
- Nene JPerth, Australia140 contributionsChiang Rai Night Market/BazaarA vibrant market with a vast range of food offerings that start at 60bht up to 300 plus for hotpot dishes. Plenty of stalls selling a mix of clothes and souvenirs. A fun place to eat and shop in the evening.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 21 March 2024
- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom186,766 contributionsWorth Visiting For Stalls & Vegetarian Food OptionsThis place feels like both a touristy and local market. There’s a mix of stalls, shops, but the main attraction seems to be the food court. Most of the stalls sell clothes, although there are some selling souvenirs obviously aimed at tourists. It's not just foreign tourists though, there’s also a lot of Thai tourists. The food court is very popular with both foreigners and Thais. The seating is in the centre with food stalls arranged along either side. There’s also toilets and a stage at the eastern end of the food court. From I think about 7 onwards, there’s often performers on stage. Vegetarians can get a decent meal here too. A word of warning though. I would avoid during the rainy season as there's no cover and the thunderstorms are intense.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 April 2024
- Asim AChicago, Illinois127 contributionsBazar with many options for shopping but less prices than the night Bacar.A typical night bazar but prices were reasonable. Every Saturday there is a Sat bazar also by the clock tower which I think is little non touristy so the prices are little better. This market in from 6 PM to 12AM ON Saturdays only.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 July 2024

This was a small night market (especially compared to the Chiang Mai Night Market). There were 2 short rows of food stalls, mainly selling fried seafood and vegetables, grilled or steamed seafood, as well as seafood and meat hotpot at very affordable prices. However, the night market was quite chaotic and dirty, with dirty dishes and hotpot stoves on the ground.

Maybe it ia the time of year or the affects of covid have brought some realism or we aimply walked in one enteance and never walked all the way round because there wasnt much on offer.
The nusical stage pumped out various western acoustic covers whilst we walked round the square. We could see some more stalls in the distance but most had their grey shutters down with "for rent" signs. With the rain pouring down there was little appeal to venture onward in the hope of finding more stalls than the dozen or ao we found. On the plus side we did find a shop that sold some neat hand mase key ringkey holders.

I don't really do any souvenir shopping in Thailand, though there are plenty of things for tourists at the bazaar. For me, the best thing there was the food court. Such a variety of food and drinks there!
I enjoyed having some local northern food with a fruit smoothie, and paid 80 baht for all of that.

We visited and enjoyed ourselves but remember this is principally aim at the tourist.
Plenty of Thai silk scarves, baggy trousers etc and a very popular communal 'food court' situated in the centre. There's also two more 'regular' restaurants offering entertainment, the first of which was recommended by our guide but that we chose not to try as it was too western orientated for our taste.
I'd say that you should visit but you'll only need 30 /60 mins unless you're an obsessive shopper!
Note that the more authentic fruit market is situated only two minutes walk away and that's worth a visit too.

We walked to the night market in Chiang rai from our Baanmalai hotel. It is near the Chiang Rai Bus station. There were all sort of merchandise being sold and includes fabrics, housewares, clothes, souvenirs, food and drinks. You can relax here while sipping a beer or two. There was a stage, on which local artist were performing some number. We spent 2 hours here.

Right now the Chiang Rai Night Market runs about half of the capacity, in other words a lot of empty stalls. A stunning reminder of what Covid has caused this beautiful city and country. Nevertheless the prices here are more competitive vs Chiang Mai but the supply isn’t as diverse as the Chiang Mai night markets.

Large market with tons of different food options available. The hot pot is very popular with locals and tourists, and we also really enjoyed some of the smaller more local stalls. You can also get beers at the bar, and there is stage performances on most nights. Highly recommend.

Live Music and large open courtyard style seating arrangement for food adds to the charm. Don't expect anything fancy. This is a small town. The night market is just about it with limited items.

When would be a good time to visit Chiang Rai?
Thank you

I stayed at Mora Boutique Hotel. Just about 5mins walk from the night market. The hotel is brand new and the staff and service was great. The room was very spacious. Comes with all amenities plus complimentary water, drinks and snacks in the mini bar! They have a pool, jacuzzi and wellness area and common laundry facilities.
They offer a delicious breakfast with western or Thai hot food cooked to order plus continental spread! Local coffee was great! I visited In January. The temperature was cooler in the morning and got warm through the day. I’m told it can get very hot, similar to BKK in April/May.
It was my first visit to the city and loved everything about it!

Is it wheelchair friendly going around night bazaar?
Written 23 March 2018
The bazaar itself is wheelchair friendly. The stalls are well layed out and because it’s on a main road the surface is smooth. However, getting through the crowds would be a challenge even on foot!

Hi, can somebody tell me please if the Night Bazaar is open every night of the week??? Many thanks
Written 27 January 2018
Chiang Rai Night Bazaar operates every night towards the top of Phaholyothin Road. It has a wide range of stalls including a good selection of handicrafts and a nice food stall area. For those who get a bit peckish there is a central restauarant with first floor views over the bazaar which enable diners to eat and watch shoppers browse below them. While the bazaar is definitely worth a visit, the main event is the weekly Saturday afternoon-evening market along Thanalai which is quite simply colossal. Get there around 4pm to avoid later crushes because by 6pm there are thousands of shoppers out exploring hundreds and hundreds of stalls over a huge area. This event often produces rare stalls not seen at the bazaar, offering unusual items for sale from ornate wood carvings to specialist clothing, perfumes and metalwork. Hope this helps.
