First, this is a Muslim building in the heart of a Roman city, so it rates a visit just for that history alone, Second, it offers absolutely fantastic views of the entire Palmyra. Not sure how it has faired in the current conflict (we went in 2002), but well worth investigating if you get to the area.

We opted NOT to go inside the castle and avoided paying the entry fee. We visited during mid day and later, closer to sunset and had wonderful views of the valley below, where Palmyra sits. The castle cannot be missed from just about anywhere in Palmyra.

Very old but great views of Palmyra and many funerary towers. Great views of the surrounding city that is growing all the time. My guess is they are in trouble at the moment with no tourists visiting. Worth while visiting when the country gets back to normality.

Perched high atop the mountain it rests on overlooking the truly marvellous Palmyra, the Muslim Castle is a superb cap to the extraordinary adventure that is the historic site of Palmyra. It dominates the landscape and constantly reminds the visitor of the remarkable heritage of this area with its enormous Roman ruins overlooked by an Islamic Castle. The drive up... More

most romantic monument overlooking the entire city of palmyra, and the valley of the tombs as well. the scenery is marvellous and taking pictures there is a must. definitely worth designating an hour or so to relax there especially around the sunset.
