You can go to Italy and see a lot of Roman ruins. But the crowds kill you. You can go to Palmyra and see the most spectacular Roman ruins with about six souls in sight and the only people hassling you are the occasional hawker trying to sell you a cheap souvenir. Accommodation is basic, but the place is deserted... More

I visited Palmyra in June 2005 and besides the bedouins who live there me and a friend and my daughter were the only people there, absolutely beyond beautiful. My daughter hired a horse from a bedouin boy and explored on horseback while i eplored on foot by myself to walk to the tombs on the outskirts of Palmyra. It was... More

It was a great place to visit in 1996. I was there as a teenager. I miss Syria. I hope for peace in Syria.

We approached Palmyra from the mountains with the medieval fort perched atop. What a view! Palmyra in all it's glory! I could imagine how it might have looked when it was a bustling city! During our two day stay in the neighboring town we had the opportunity to visit Palmyra ruins several times, including clambering up the remains of one... More

Palmyra was one of the best preserved and largest of all Roman Cities within the Middle East. It has so many very interesting places within it enormous site. One must spend the minimum of one full day to see all interesting places within the Ancient City called Palmyra! In the past I had always stayed for two or three days... More

I visited Palmyra on five occasions between 2008 and 2010. Five because it was so special and so unique it felt like a sanctuary from modern life, a grounding experience where the contemporary subsides in importance in front of the past. Watching the sunset from the castle was a life experience every time. Riding the camels was fun, eating and... More

Visited Palymra in 2000 and in 1997. Given the recent events, I felt obligated to write on it. Having visited 75 or so countries, Palmyra and the Grand Canyon are my two most favorite sites in the world. It is very difficult to believe, as you drive towards Palmyra, what you will stumble upon. The site is enormous, the lack... More
