Fort Galle is an ancient fortified city that was the main port on the island for more than 200 years. The city experienced its heyday in the 18th center during Dutch colonial rule, erupting into an exotic hotspot for spice traders traveling between Europe and Asia. Today the city still handles some shipping and yachts, but has refined its reputation... More

Marvellous place and example to craftsmanship. Right on the edge of ocean and in the front of Galle Cricket Stadium. Must visit.

I was really looking forward to Galle and overall it didn't disappoint. The walls are great for walking and views, and you can't go wrong getting lost in the small streets that criss cross the whole town. The old Dutch colonial buildings are beautiful and a lot of effort and art has gone into making this a great place for... More

This is the place to go in Galle to watch the sunset. The top of the ramparts overlooks the ocean and is the place to be for sunset.

It will take a solid 1.5-2hours to walk this at a leisurely pace, stopping to take photos and admire the views. Start at 4pm at the clock tower and walk clockwise so that you finish on the West side for sunset. It's run down in many places, littered on others, and just outright dangerous in places. If you take kids,... More

The fort is just marvelous and still quite quiet compared to simular forts in Europe. The dutchbarchticture in combination with the palmtrees, the green and the turquoise see is fantastic andcsurreaal.

The entire town of Galle is surrounded by the fort! We went up the fort area close to the Galle cricket stadium and clock tower and spent around a couple of hours marvelling at the view. The area was surrounded by the sea on almost three sides and the place gave a good historical feeling. Galle was badly affected by... More

Galle fort is having the heritage ambiance and hence a good place to stay while in Galle. As its touristy food is really expensive.

We stopped here on the last day of our tour. It looked lovely. We arrived around lunchtime. Far too hot. We only had a short stay so didn't get much to see down the lovely looking streets - I wish we had of had longer there. We walked passed the local primary school and the children were all waiving to... More
