Visiting the Dutch Reformed Church is a must when visiting Gall Fort area. The hexagonal pulpit, a unique mural tablet, great woodwork using Malayan wood stand out. Burial Chambers (now restored) also add to the mystique!

The stained glass windows in this quiet peaceful Church are old and not very spectacular. It's the tributes on the walls, most dating from the 18th century, that are so touching. Several give the length of life in years, months, weeks and days and there's an especially lovely one to Mary Cecilia Twynam from the officers she helped. There is... More

Tuesday 6th October and we took the local bus from our Hotel, Riu Sri Lanka in Ahungalla,  to Galle, it took about 1 hour journey and cost 60 SR Rupees, about 30p, each, single fare. While walking around the Fort in Galle, we came across this Church, it was just down the road, on Church Street from the bigger and taller... More

Well worth a visit. There are lots of gravestones on the floor of the church dating from the Dutch colonial days and others on the wall from the British era. The Dutch ones date from the 1700's and most people died from tropical diseases, many of them at a young age.

During the 1600s the Dutch maritime fleet traded around the world and established forts at key trading posts. Galle in Sri Lanka is one of those sites and the fort they built is a fantastic representation of forts throughout the Spice Route. Spend 1-2 hours walking through the city and another 45 minutes at the Maritime and Archeology Museum (... More

Unfortunately when we went it was overloaded with tour bus visitors....many of whom did not bother that they were in a place of worship...loud mouthed, hat wearing, mini shorted. Sorry, it's a beef of mine. Apart from that little rant, this was a lovely part of Galle Fort history not to be missed.

While waiting for a museum to open I wandered around the downtown Basel area and happened upon the Dutch Reformed Church. This 14th century Gothic style church is the final resting place of famed philosopher Erasmus. Both the exterior and interior are work of art and the stained glass windows are magnificent. There is a beautiful mural adorning the ceiling... More
