Our Lonely Planet guidebook suggested including the Zwart Bastion (Black Fort) as part of a self-guided walking tour. However, despite our best efforts, you cannot get into it unless you are willing to trespass! We gave up and instead retraced our steps to the shady Court Square where we watched the children playing cricket - which was far more enjoyable!

The last vestige of the Portuguese settlement is tiny so make sure you get a map of Galle Fort to appreciate it and everything the Fort has to offer - so many nooks and crannies to explore. The Gallery at Fort Printers or the Serendipity Café should be able to give you one.

The oldest bastion built by the Portuguese, known as Zwart Bastion, meaning Black Bastion/ Fort. The place was so named as it was covered in smoke most of the time with the firing of guns and cannons! It is said to have been built between 1725 - 1735 and has a secret exit from Galle Fort. The tunnel under the... More
