Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The beach has beautiful, clear waters, and really nice cafe by the sea with good pastries and tea.
We went there by Bus 101 from CJU airport followed by a short walk. There are tons of places to eat, such that you will be spoilt for choice near the beach . Easy to get a taxi there too. Parking lots are available too.
Highly recommend this place for beach and sea lovers and those who enjoy coffee by the sea.

If you think of swimming there like in France or other, you will be disappointed.
The view is beautiful but the site is polluted with hydrocarbons from the ferry and jet-ski of the guards (yes they travel by jet-ski) among the swimmers...), not to mention the cloudy water.
Bathers are no more or less parked in an aquatic enclosure...

Ah these Korean beaches… difficult to have a positive opinion.
They are crowded, full of umbrellas for rent with their tables and chairs (no deck chairs), the area where you are allowed to wade (that's the right term) is ridiculously small and you will be surrounded by people splashing around with their buoys.
But hey, the color of the water here is pretty and the environment (when you don't look at the ugly buildings behind you) is not bad

The beach with the dirtiest water I have ever seen in my life (and I have seen some!). Pieces of plastic dispersed in the water along with algae and rubbish, even coming out to sea (before the lifeguards call you to order) nothing changes. I don't know if it's the current, the shape of the bay or the buildings so close to the beach, but it's the ugliest we've seen in Jeju.

If you come from a tropical country, you'd probably be used to white sand beaches with palm trees and crystal clear waters. In this case, you may not find Hamdeok Beach interesting, and yet it is one of the favorite beaches of people in Jeju Island. It's got some white sand (but a bit rocky in some areas), clear waters (although there's green algae in some places) and they organize quite a number of water activities too (like snorkeling, kayaking, etc.) for a fee. Some day tours usually include a short visit to this beach, but it's not worth spending too much time on it unless you're a beach lover.

It was fall but the air was warm and the water was warm. Warmer day than a great summer day back home so of course we went for a swim! The beach was pristine and the water so clear. The beach of course was not busy at all and we felt a little awkward because everyone on the beach was watching us crazy Canadians swimming when there was no one else in the water except some people on motorized surfboards with wetsuits. We did not have much time and unfortunately the change rooms were closed so we had to change into our swim suite in the public toilets which were not too clean.

Nice news h to laze around . Food for family or couples . There are several cafes and restaurants nearby to soak the atmosphere . Beach is not that long at around 150m wide and long . Waves are pretty calm allowing kids to wade in and not strong enough for surfers to pose a risk . Good place to chill for several hours and an hour away from Jeju city.

Your experience at Hamdeok (함덕) will vary wildly.
It's a beach where things happen. Even swimming.
Pros: Hamdeok is surrounded by some fairly muscular resort action for a beach of this size, and it gets more than its fair share of activities. Volleyball tournaments, beach parties, and above all the music festivals. If you happen to be around for the Stepping Stone Festival in July, go. The best concerts I have seen in Korea have been at Hamdeok. The audiences are happy, diverse, family friendly, and enthusiastic, and for the most part enjoy very moderate amounts of both testosterone and alcohol poisoning - emphasis on "for the most part". Hamdeok is fairly central. It's close to Jeju City and many of the activities and sites that make Jeju a growing tourist destination, but far enough away from the airport that you are not always drowning in swarms of airplanes and their contents. You can find a variety of decent places to eat in the vicinity. The sand and surf is a very pleasant combination of white, blue and green. If you've been to Australia or Hawaii, you probably won't be impressed. However, for Korea it's superb, and for Jeju it's a solid place to go if you want to do some casual swimming. But take note: this is not where you go for snorkeling or quiet sunbathing. Hamdeok does boast some strong outdoor lighting for evening swims, which is nice, as well as some convenient and beautiful coastal walks/hikes, often punctuated with spectacular sunsets.
Cons: This is a small beach which can very easily become overcrowded, or even insanely overcrowded. It can also be noisy enough during the weekend to drive away even the most dedicated of extroverts. The first time I went to Hamdeok I became convinced that the loud speakers - all blaring entirely different music and/or announcements at the same time - were actually designed to create overlapping kill zones. There are tables with umbrellas for rent on the beach, as well as stands with various floating devices, but they are all of average quality at best, and I found the entire set up disruptive of the beach experience. The swimming is fair, but don't expect to do much more than just swimming. I've seen waves at Hamdeok, but not often, and certainly not much in the way of water sports like surfing. And keep in mind that Korean lifeguards are assiduous in their monitoring of swimmers - i.e. you won't be able to go out too far before the whistles blow. The bathroom facilities are weak, with austere changing areas, and ice cold showers that you have to pay for. Bring your own shampoo, etc. Hamdeok is also growing in popularity, so the current balance of tourists-to-beach may soon tip into an unacceptable range. There are already times when driving along the beachfront road becomes an exercise in patience and defensive driving, often due to gallivanting hordes of people under the influence of tourism, which is far worse than alcohol when it comes to lowering inhibitions and promoting idiocy. There has also been a troubling increase in the kind of businesses that want to capitalize on the "tourist beach experience", selling tawdry souvenirs, poorly handled food, and watered down drinks made with the worst commercially available ingredients they can find. You will know them by their flashing lights and loud, thumpingly generic club music being boom-boxed into your face. However, considered these places a "pro" if you enjoy the spring break mentality and mild diarrhea. Lastly, the weather of Jeju is capricious, so just accept the fact that it will probably rain at least once as you storm the beach. But that's just Jeju.

I am in love with Hamdeok. I have been so for over 6 years now. The water is often sparkling blue and green. The sand is soft. The sunsets there are fantastic. Plenty of activities to do/food to eat/drinks to drink.
Pro Tip: Head up to the oreum on the right of the beach for a fantastic view!

This place was gorgeous! It is a Korean beach so it is crowded please keep that in mind. I am a Floridian and we have some of the best and most peaceful beaches on earth. But this, even for me, was truly an experience. One the amount of people was impressive but less crowded than Busan beach. Try to get here early and pay the money for the umbrella spot. They all cost the same, but you wanna be in the first row so you can see the water.
The water is truly beautiful. The color is very different than floridan green blue waters. The ocean here is the deepest darkest blue I've ever seen, and the part that meets the beach is a light bright crystal blue.
There are many families and watching the kids is really cute. We spent a lot of time floating around. Next time I would bring a float so we could inner tube around like the locals did.
You can order food and the vendors or restaurants will bring them to your umbrella.
Fried chicken is a must for Koreans on the beach. We actually were super hungry before going (next time we will do it differently) so we went to Korean food chain Mom's Touch that serves amazing crispy fried chicken in bbq glaze with pickled radishes. So on the beach we got ice cream and fresh fruits.
Warning for travelers: more of a cultural heads up. There are showers- like beaches in America have...you do have to pay to use them, but there are no private changing rooms or showers it's all a show for anyone to see. Now it is gender separated, but don't be shocked to find you'll have to strip down in front of strangers. My husband is Korean and didn't warn me, but it was too late once I walked in, plus he already paid for my shower and I really needed a shower. But here's the thing you'll notice that no one cares about you, and no one looks at anyone. Just shower off, do your thing and you'll be outta there in no time. If this is too much for you to handle...then skip the shower and head back to your place to shower in your comfort level.

Is it warm enough first week of June to swim at this beach? Any recommendations to nice hotels/pensions for family with small children? thanks
Written 14 March 2016
It should be warm enough in June. July is typically the warmest, but more crowded. We used AGODA to book with The Artstay Jeju Hamdeok Hotel, which has an ocean view, and it was extremely nice and affordable. They also have rooms where you can get multiple double beds, double with two twins, etc., so you can accommodate your family. Hope This helps!
