About
The Tiberias Hot Springs National Park displays one of the most spectacular mosaics of ancient synagogues in Israel. On the site, where the Hot Springs of Tiberias flow, there is also a beautifully preserved 18th century structure of a Turkish Hamam.

Really two attractions in one: an ancient synagogue and an old bathhouse with natural hot spring. Not to mention very kind staff. We came on a rainy day and was the only tourists here. We walked through the hot spring stream, saw a big barn-like structure and went inside. Inside was a beautifully preserved mosaic, with different human figures of different seasons, which is very unusual for Judaism. About half a minute after we stepped inside, the lights inside went out so we tried to run back outside, as it turns out, the lights went out because a movie was starting inside! We saw a short of animation regarding the mosaic and the seasons, and ancient life in that area. Great for children, but adults too.
As we left, the park staff directed us to a bathhouse on the other side of the entrance with some interesting artifacts. We would've definitely missed it without their directions. Very much worth a visit.

Pay the cost of a simple coffee and can sit from opening to closing in a small park with picnic tables and 3 pools with temperatures of 30, 35 and 40 degrees Celsius.
My wife and I came here for just an hour to warm up and see another attraction during our vacation, but even so, we liked it. Here you can sit and relax without picnics and other activities... just ... relax.

Compared to the other National Parks in Israel this one was a disappointment, difficulty parking and the springs are mostly piped elsewhere...to resorts nearby.
There are well preserved mosaics to be seen protected in the building. The brochure translates the Greek and Aramaic Greek to English so you can fully appreciate what your looking at.
The NP map shows that there should be a pool full of the hot spring water, it was drained...just a bit of dirty water and mosquito's.
Overall the property was dirty and not well kept...the mosaics are worth while if your in the area.
Fee: 14NIS/$4 USD

South of the modern city, the old city, the Roman city, and the modern hot springs you will find Hamat Tiberias. This is an archaeological park that contains remains of a beautiful 3rd century synagogue with a zodiac motif embellishing its floor. Many hot springs are located around the grounds of the park, first excavated back in the 1920s. There is a second synagogue on the site, and this one was dated later, to the fourth century. It is believed that the biblical city of Hammath underlies this site, but no excavations have been attempted to go back that early in history. Archaeology is one of those destructive sciences, and once you destroy a place to get to possibly underneath, the destruction you caused lasts forever....

The Hamat Teverya (Tiberias) National Park (NOT TO BE CONFUSED with Hamat Gader Park) is a small national park that boasts a magnificent (3-4 century) mosaic floor, the earliest such floor found in Israel.
The mosaic depicts a spectacular wheel of the zodiac surrounding the image of Helios, the sun of god, and four women, representing the four seasons, in the four corners. The depiction of the zodiac in a synagogue (also in Beit Alfa/Alef) is a puzzling phenomenon. For more information on this interesting point Google “astronomy wheel in synagogue mosaic”, the site www.biblicalarchaeology.org offers a detailed discussion.
Ironically, this national treasure was defaced by ignorant vandals and cost millions of dollars in damage; Google "hamat national park & mosaic vandalism" to see the extent of the damage. Having seen the mosaic and after having read the (jpost, ynetnews, and haaretz articles makes my heart ache).
The National Park is located next to the Rabbi Meir (the Miracle Worker) tomb. For interesting comparison, Google the name and see the wikipedia picture of the place before the excavation of the park. Quite fascinating.

A really good place to visit if you don't have a car to visit other ancient sites around galilee. The signs were in good English and only cost approx. £3 to see the unusual mosaics and test out the spa waters. a far more authentic experience than many other spuriously located Christian sites since these were definitely here in the time of Christ.

The importance of this site is often overlooked and not understood. The Sanhedrin was based in Tiberias when these synagogues were built, thus the amazing nature of the mosaic floors.
The mosaics refute so much of what was believed to apply to what was acceptable in building synagogues - particularly as they show unclothed men in the mosaics, plus a wheel of zodiac signs (the "common accepted wisdom" is that synagogues never showed images of any sort as it had always been forbidden to make "graven images" in houses of worship). They are superbly preserved and superbly displayed.
Really worth the visit - and it only takes about 30 - 45 minutes. And the guide provided is clear and well written.

We were staying in Tiberias and this near-by site is located right on the road along the Sea of Galilée and is very convenient to reach. The mosaics of an ancient bath house and a Synagogue are not extensive but definitely worth a visit.
