Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Locally known as "rumah budaya" (culture house), the institute offers a remarkable collection of historic and present-day cultural artefacts from Sumba's diverse tribal groups, as well as a programme of activities and excursions to megalithic villages and places of scenic beauty. Established by Robert Ramone, the institute is nestled in a peaceful coconut grove just 20 minutes by car from the main airport at Tambolaka, off the main road from Weetebula to the subdistrict of Kodi in the island's southwest. An impressive collection of photographic displays, showing for example the making of traditional "adat" houses or huge gravestones up to 30 tons, complements the exhibits, housed in two traditional buildings on pillars, flanking an open stage for dance and other performances. Visitors should give a donation, as there is no formal entrance fee.

In coming across Sumba east-to-west, one of the last places we stayed was this Catholic Retreat Center. With a wonderful little museum, a large meeting hall, and several big bungalows, some single, some double or triple rooms. Altho they had some construction going on, it was only occasionally a bother. The breakfasts were pretty good, tho we had to go into Tambolaka for dinners. Very clean, pretty quiet, and a good value!

Entry fee is too expensive for tourists, IDR 50,000. Nothing much to see, better go to algadry souveneer at waikabubak, no charges for entry and better and more artefacts.

Sumba is also called "Tanah Marapu", that is because they have this Marapu belief. Marapu is an ancient belief, kind of animism belief, which still exsist and worshiped by Sumba people. This place, is like a one stop information center if you want to know about Marapu and Sumbanese culture. Because there are no literarure about Marapu, so we could get full information from locals. So this is defenitely a must visit place when you go to Sumba. You will surely got the information you need

This place is like a miniature museum of Sumba. You can learn a lot about Sumba's people, land, history, art and culture.
The owner, pastor Robert was available at the time to show us around and explained a lot of interesting stuff.
We slept at their guest house for several days, it was clean with AC and cold shower and conveniently located to be able to go around Sumba Barat Daya (South West Sumba).

Rumah Budaya Sumba, is a place where I always choose to stay everytime I go to Sumba island.
The place is quiet hidden, and not too far away from the airport, and located up on the hill, and what I like it most that it has the traditional local architecture of Sumba House, with that high grass roof.
There is a museum in this place that display Sumbanese cultural things and utensils for Sumbanesse traditional rites and especially the fabulous beautiful Sumbanesse weaving textiles motifs and patterns.
There are limestone sculptures to around the central field of this place which are represents animals that are significant in the Sumbanesse culture.
In the few months, the Sumbanesse Weaving Textile Museum is about ready to be open, in these new Museum, you will be able to see the richness motifs and patterns and techniques that is being used to make all of the beautiful Sumbanesse weaving Textile ("Sarong").
There are two backpacker lodges with much less expensive that you can rent.
So, next time, if you need a boutique hotel and enjoy learning of Sumbanesse culture and architecture, I suggest you to stay in this place.

Worth visiting if you're in the area. So great artifacts showcasing the history of this off the beaten track island. Staff were very helpful, even had a shot of locally brewed spirit (sumba's version of arak). Would have been great if they had more artifacts but apparently most of them have been purchased over the last few years.

When we got there the center was closed for Lebaran holiday. So we didn't see much. However, this amazing place offered a cozy atmosphere. We were allowed to walk around the area and enjoy the calm cool breeze. When you enter this area, you will be welcomed by 'a school of' coconut trees on your left and right hand sides. The 2 main buildings resemble Sumba traditional house. You won't miss a cluster of bungalow and rooms available for visitors to rent. The whole area was really clean. It seems that everything was well-maintained.
