Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

when you are in Medan spare your time to visit this charming temple, it's not just free of charge but i think this temple has beautiful architectural design, the people there are very welcoming. they let me photograph as long as I didn't make noise. You can explore every corner of the temple. Right behind of it, there is a river overlook a busy street

This Taoist Temple Vihara Gunung Timur is located 500 m south of the Hindu temple and It overlooks the Babura River. Known as the oldest temple in Medan that was built on 1962.

Unfortunately, I came by not at the right time as they were preparing things up for the upcoming Chinese New Year, February 2013.

Surprisingly, a guard stop us when we were about to walk out from the area, he asked for money and even said that there were 2 guards at that moment... It was such an indecent behaviour.. but since we were just 2 backpacker girls, tried to prevent unnecessary things so we gave them 10.000,00 IDR. Never knows what will happen, so please always be careful.

that being said (the tittle) if you have been to place like Penang where there are much more old temple then Vihara gunung timur might not be that amazing. its one of the oldest and always filled travel brochure's for medan. the inside area is not very big, a few minute of walkabout will do. nothing especially special

This is a Chinese / Buddhist temple located in the older/ central part of Medan. It is easy to find/ and there isn't any admission charge. It is a lovely example of this type of temple and offers a slightly different insight into Indoneisan culture (being that the country is predominantly Muslim). It is worth a visit.

If you would like to see a real functioning chinese temple than you have to go this place. It is in the small street but it's worth powder and shot.

I have been here for a number of times. It is the biggest Buddhist temples in term of the number of god statues. Each altar is marked with number and one will pray from one altar to another in chronological order. Praying paper and candles are free of charge. It is situated in a very serene location and its front faces a river
