Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Entrance fee can only be paid by cash card from Bank BNI and no other alternative. Near the entrance of the Goa Jepang (Japanese Cave), many tour guides are waiting. They told us that it is better to hire a guide in order to enjoy the whole experience and explore the cave more extensively. We chose to enter the cave ourselves by following the map posted near entrance. It was alright until on one end there is a locked gate where we couldn't pass through to other end of the tunnel. Other visitors told us that with tour guide, we should be able to get through the gate though.

We visited the Japanese tunnel in August 2019. The main entrance of this 1.5 kilometers long tunnel (opened to that can be explored tourists is located in Panorama Park.
We had an English speaking guide, who explained us that the tunnel was built secretly, by forced labor Javanese people, during the 2nd world war. We went down using a steepy stone staircase to visit the headquarters of Japanese army, including barracks, command rooms, ambush doors.
Amazing!!!

Goa Jepang stored sad stories where Indonesian workers should work day and night with a very little food to fulfill Japanese ambitions during short colonization in Indonesia, to build this cave/tunnels. However if you just go into it without hear the story, things looked not so special. But if you take a guided tour, you will understand the reason, the role of this cave and all stories behind it. I did it in the second try when entering this cave. The total length is supposedly more than 1000 km, but the original plan, the total length of the tunnels should be more than 5000 km. I think the cave is still improved, because some historical part will be preserved e.g. room for ammunition. If you are afraid of long tunnel, narrow places and darkness, don't go inside. In short it is worth going inside when you are sure someone can tell the story, so having a guide is recommended. But, I was not sure when we could get guide who speak English, because when we were there, only Indonesian-speak guides were available. Some end of tunnels toward the valley are open, designed for hiding and escaping, and has a beautiful scenery.

Before entering the tunnel, a local tunnel guide has offered his guide service of 10,000 Rupiah per head. We tried to paid him before entering the tunnel, but he politely said, pay later.
At the end of the visit, he changed his words demanded it was RM 10 equivalent to 30,000 Rupiah. He argued that he said RM 10 per head.
It is advisable to pay up the agreed fee before agreeing to the local tunnel guide service. !!!!!
I felt really upset about it due to the unacceptable ethics.

Optional Guides can be useful, but very pushy (he asked for 70K excluding tips), he lowered it down to 50K when we refused to use them.
My friend felt it's spooky there (probably after the guide told many were dead here when it was found). For me... Nothing.
The location doesn't not have any explanation or anything. This is when a guide can be useful. But all stories are not backed by facts as there was no survivor found (at least the guide honest in this).

This caves network were manually carved(forced worker imported from other village) out of a mountain and was reported to be in excess of 6000 meter long.
There are daily task of targeted one meter run per day using manual work with normal chipping tool and wheel barrow for transport of waste (the markers are still visible)
Interesting visit to know that the Japanese invasion during WW2
at this part of Indonesia.
More of a logistic and ammo storage place hidden from aerial view .
Not much of write up were available from the occupier cos it was a secret mission.
All information were collected locally .

Its a fun experience as there were 10 of us, with 7 adults, 1 child and 2 infants.
You will be charged for entry fee and there will be a tour guide, but, the tourguide will only bring you to the entrance of the tunnel, and if you wish to have a tour guide in the tunnel, you will be charge an extra RM 15 per person. We felt that was a bit expensive, so we did not take up the tour guide offer.
So we went down the tunnel of approximately 152 steps, the tunnel was lighted but there were area which was very dark. At first we couldn't find the exit and decided to wait for a group which was using a tour guide service, but my brothers manage to find the way out.
At the exit, there were 3 guys waiting, and they were asking us questions like 'Where's your tour guide?' and they suggested for us to ask our driver to fetch us at the exit. We were quite skeptical and felt like this person was actually trying to ask for money.
So the experience of visiting the tunnel was great, but the locals who act like they owned the place tarnish the experience.

Must visit when you're there. Quite a long walk but worth it to appreciate its story. Tour Guides are volunteers- they charge RM10 per pax (adults only). Lose some calories while learning about the history, it's awesome!

When in Bukittingi, you have very few options to go around for sight visits. Japaanese Cave is one of them. However, in comparison to other attraction, it has nothig spectacular to offer, except that there are many tunnels underground, siad to be used by Japanese to hide and store food. Entry is from a hill top. You have to go about 150 steps down to enter the tunnel, but you can come out of the tunnel by walking straight and you will find yourself on the road at the bottom of the hill.
Full length of tunnels is about 1.5 kilometers, but if you walk about 300 meters, you can cover main portion of it. Tunnel has been reconstucted to make its height enough so that even a tall person can walk. It is bit dark but dim lights have been put in.The guide also takes a torch with him. Visit if you have enough time, but even if you want to give it a skip, you will not miss much.

this is one of the historic place for visits. somehow, if you want to explore the place make sure you a fit as the place is extremely big and the distance is extremely long....that's not the main issue but the thousands numbers of stairs you have to walk through must be consider ahead.
