I love watching the mountain from my hotel window in the morning! When it is not cloudy you can see the sun creates a golden colour on its green peak. On the bottom there always be fog that creates such a misterious sense. In the evening, the golden rays return with more warmth. Enjoy it with a cup of coffee... More

I wont say that it is a mountain peak. It is fairly wide peak. You will have to walk quite a bit on flat ground surrounded by lava pools (very far from the track.no worries) to reach the actual peak. The view towards and on top of the peak is spactacular. The peak is fairly small area at most only... More

Walk up the mountain at night to arrive for sunset. You must take a local guide. Al Dava is excellent and can be found in Bukittinggi or via his Facebook page. You arrive just before dawn and watch the sun rise over the moutains to the east. The pink rays light up the plumes of volcanic smoke rising from the... More

Since its still active, it was hard to get to water sources so make sure you packed up enough water supply. The view above worth the pain. The Edelweiss feild was a stand out. But the rubbish and vandalism were the major problem. But the best thing of hiking in West Sumatra mountains is you will meet the most hospitable... More

We took the easy way out and took a ride in a 4-wheel drive jeep. When we arrived near the top there were several vendors there to help. We randomly chose one and took are beautiful drive throughout the area. I have to admit, it was rough, but well worth the experience. The ride was almost two hours long and... More

Can only see from a distance cos this dormant volcano is close to the normal public. You need to make arrangement with serious mountain climbing group to climb this Mount Merapi. Even through it is still dormant but the surrounding area is extremely fertile for veggie farming.

Been there for many times. mild breath-taking trek. the most climbed mountain in West Sumatera, the view is beautiful and really worth to see. Nothing's special actually if it's not your first climbing. so many people climbed it, but the trash is everywhere that made the way up there really dirty. If you want to feel crowded atmosphere, you should... More
