I had no idea of the history of Surabaya, but the square, monument and museum all educate a visitor. 10 November 1945 is when the Indonesians started to fight the British for 21 days. The square is well laid out and the monument is striking.
I visited early on a public holiday and it was hard to get into the square, but the museum was open. The football stadium is named after the date of the war.

The square in itself and the obelisk is nothing special. The small museum on the other hand is very interesting and for sure worth a visit. Entry fee for foreigners same as for Indonesians and that was a pleasant surprise. As solo traveling "londo" (white skin) you are often more of an attraction than the museum collection and be prepared to asked quite often to pose for pictures with several people. It takes time but it is always friendly asked.

Nice alternating illuminating colors on the monument . Good pictures turn out with the background if taken from across the field.

The monument itself isn't all that interesting to look at frankly. The closer you approach it, the more it looks like it's made of cheap plastic or some kind of material that's not destined to last. Plus, the paint job can definitely use some improvement. However, most people don't come for the aesthetics of the monument but rather its significance. As a testament to those who fought and died for the country's independence, it is both a somber and a joyous place that most certainly will have an impact on you. I don't really know how to explain it, but even as a non-Indonesian walking into Tugu Pahlawan, I can feel the glory, triumph, and pride emanating from it, probably the same feelings of glory, triumph, and pride that all Indonesians must feel when paying tribute to this place. Moreover, like the monument in Denpasar, it is Surabaya's own way of thanking its local heroes for all the sacrifices they made for the nation. In fact, seeing similar monuments in Denpasar and Surabaya only reinforces the idea of how important a unified Indonesia is for all Indonesians. Thus, regardless of where they are from (Denpasar, Surabaya, Jakarta...) or what ethnicity they are (Balinese, Javanese, Sundanese...), they are first and foremost Indonesians and ready to make sacrifices for the preservation of their nation. Yes, the shared sense of patriotism I felt was overwhelming, so much so that I have now put the monument in Jakarta on my bucket list for when I go to Jakarta for the first time.
