Sunan Ampel Mosque is the third oldest mosque in Indonesia, founded by Raden Achmad Rachmatullah in 1421, in the territory of the kingdom of Majapahit. The mosque was built by the ancient Javanese architecture, with the feel of a thick Arabic. Raden Achmad Rachmatullah better known as Sunan Ampel, died in 1481. His grave is located in the west of... This place is HOT. it'a souk. wear something light but respectful to the locals. a light button down shirt or t-shirt should be sufficient. and Men / women should... More

This is an old mosque in the Arab quarter of town. It is hidden a bit.. Not visible from the main road. Enroute to the mosque you will go through a bazaar or souk selling dates, prayer accessories, food and drinks..a bit crowded at times. Mosque is still functioning and souk is 24 hours .

We planned some time during our visit to come to the Ampel mosque and the surrounding area, which we regretted. The mosque itself is not impressive or beautiful to see at all, so for a tourist not really worthwhile visiting. In the area around the mosque, we only got lost in the small streets, where local inhabitants were really unfriendly... More

It has pretty good night market with many street food sellers. Even if you aren't moslem, you will still enjoy this place.

This is an interesting place to visit for its historical and religious significance. Unfortunately non-Muslims are not welcome to enter the mosque. The surrounding area towards the grave of Sunan Ampel is worth-seeing - the pilgrims drinking the "holy" water. Most interesting to me is the Arab souk - or covered market. This reminds me so much of Morocco or... More

It's Sunan Ampel cemetary with mosque. After you pray or sholat here, you can buy some Arabian stuffs in the market before you go home. It's cheaper than other market.
