I was so excited for the trip, unfortunately, the drive is very curvy. If you tend to have motion sickness, I do not recommend this trip. The only thing worth seeing is the crater, the rest of the places, Telletubies and Pasir Berisik are not worth the long drive. Not much to enjoy.

I believe many people already reviewed about the scenery, and how to get to semeru, etc.. Here i post some necessary things need to be prepared before trekking to semeru.

1. You must do pre registration (at least 1 week before) at www.bromotenggersemeru.org

2. Make sure you read all the terms and condition written in the website

3. Do some excercise before

4. Don't bring to much water from the beginning (2 bottle of 1,5Litre per person is enough) because water resource is available at ranu kumbolo and kalimati

5. The temperature could reach -6 degrees celcius until 20 degrees celcius

6. NEVER swim in ranu kumbolo lake

7. The only cell provider could reach the mountain is Telkomsel (last signal will received before reach ranu kumbolo)

8. So many volcanic ashes and dust during trekking.. Prepare the mask.

9. Bring some cash (at least 500k rupiah per group), you will never know when you'll need it

10. Take 3 night stay at mountain if you want to reach the summit. It's the best. You also can do it by 2 night stay (but it will be harder)

11. Bring extra wet tissues

With 3.676 meter above the sea level, Semeru has become the highest mountain on Java. Is not only elevation that make Semeru is special, but Semeru categorized as strato-volcanic mountain. It's mean that Semeru is very active mountain, which blow out some huge hot steam, smoke, ashes and sometimes accompanied with rock as well from the creater every 15 - 20 minute.
Semeru Mountain related with Hindu cosmology, the name of Semeru originally came from Meru or Sumeru which means the abode of the God. With the legend’s lies behind, Semeru Mountain becomes the most sacred mountain in Java-Bali.
This mountain is one of the most favorite hiking destination, because the beauty of nature, such as pine forest, huge savannah, with wild flower all over place and there are also edelweiss flower.
Usually, people that are going to hike start from Ranu Pane Village (Tengger tribe), and heading to Ranu Kumbolo (a wonderful lake between) hills surround. And then continue hiking across Love Hills (folklore, said if we could climb that hill till the top without any stop on the way, or looked behind, we probably could find our true love) to reach Kali Mati- a post just before continue hiking to Arcopodo then to the summit at night. It took 2 day, 1 night to conguer this mountain.

We did the climbing with Dani from mytripfirst and they did all the heavy lifting of the food and camping equipment. Basically it was quite a premium camping experience. The weather was quite cool starting from ranu pane village, turning quite cold at night about 10 degrees so bring cold wear for your climb, especially for when you are not moving at night. Most of the hike was quite ok but for the last part of the summit attack. The route suddenly narrows and you see a steep climb filled with little rocks. You walk one step forward and you slide back. Having a guide familiar with the terrain is essential as they can show you where to climb so that you don't slide back so often, making the climb easier. Along the way we passed independent climbers who were struggling trying to force their way up directly while we were doing an easier zig zag route. Took about 4 hours while many easily took 6 or more without the guide.

Really enjoyed that trek. The climb is nice and the view amazing.
And the organization was very good. We had a guide that really made the trip fun and interesting. The team was flexible and friendly. Equipment provided was good quality (tents... especially when it rains the night before the climb).
We climbed Semeru last July ands I really recommend this agency

I trekked from Ranu Pane to Kumbolo lake, and then onto Kalimati campsite on day 1. Ate dinner around 6 then slept in a tent till 12:30AM. Started trekking up Mt Semeru 1:30AM. 3.5hrs ascent to the summit, arriving before sunrise.

The temperature drops as you climb. I didn't have a ski jacket, but had a few layers I could add/remove as I needed (long-sleeve icebreaker top, 2 polarfleece sweaters, rain/wind jacket shell), plus ski gloves, beanie, scarf, hiking trousers. And it was fine.
Plan for zero degrees at the summit, with possibility of -5 deg windchill. My guide told me about some local Indo climbers that had recently mis-judged the conditions and suffered hypothermia.

The whole 2 day trek is really dusty, with the fine volcanic dust everywhere. Recommend taking a few (at least 4) of the disposable 3M face dust masks. You can buy them at any Indonesian pharmacy for a couple bucks. The downside is that they make it slightly harder to breath during the ascent when you need to breath really hard.

Also recommend decent hiking boots (not just low-top shoes), and gaiters. Because the scoria / gravel / scree on the way up will otherwise cause you grief. And Boots make the descent much easier (you can ski down the scree in your boots!! lots of fun...)

You *can* do it on your own, but its so much easier with a tour company that provides a guide, porter, food, tent, and all the logistics. I used 'Java Eco Trip' and they were really affordable and good to work with.

If you invest the time and effort to make this trek you will hopefully be rewarded with a spectacular daybreak over the Indonesian island of Java. Semeru, at 3676m is still very much an active volcano and even during my visit was belching forth smoke, dust and hurling the occasional rock into the air.
Be warned: this is not a trek to be lightly undertaken although it should be within the capabilities of most fit individuals. If you have any doubt, remember to make a serious effort to prepare your fitness level prior to your trip. It would be bitterly disappointing to travel all the way to this wonderful place only to find that the summit remained just out of your grasp. Bear in mind that the classic trip from Ranu Pane involves a trek of 45km so make sure that not only your body is prepared but also that your boots are well broken in. It can and most probably will be cold on the exposed stretches above the tree line and the wind can certainly batter trekkers so make sure you have appropriate clothing. Another indispensable item is a pole. The upper stages are composed of volcanic sand which provides treacherous footing as well as the soul destroying experience of slipping backwards with each forward step.
I bought into a trekking package but it is possible just to rent equipment locally, buy the mandatory climbing permit and follow the trails through the national park. This would be the budget way to do it but I appreciated having an experienced and knowledgable guide with me.
If you are successful and reach the summit predawn, you might experience the red glow from within the crater and hopefully a sunrise experience whilst the volcano vents off which will become a lifelong treasured memory.

The reason this gets a terrible review is because they have just put the rates up for tourists from 25000 to 207500 at the beginning of May. Local prices have risen to 17000.
I made my way from Malang and climbed to the top independently. You can rent camping equipment in Rane Pane.
It would have been nice to have 3 days but 2 was sufficient.
The top of the mountain is covered in litter and be warned that there are no facilities inside the park.
You will need a cooker and pan for boiling water from the lake.
Also be aware that should you go at the weekend, the charges are increased to 307500.

Hiking Gunung Semeru was an amazing experience, albeit a tedious process in preparing for the hike.

We went for the hike independently without a tour (we're all regular hikers in Indonesia), and it wasn't easy getting the necessary documents and permits prior to the hike. information on transportation wasn't widely available/accurate as well.

Nonetheless, we made it work and hit the summit of the highest peak in Java!

If you need anything information, do let me know!
