My husband and 14y/o son did the rafting while I stayed behind. We were told it would take 2hrs, but it wasn't made clear that the 2hrs was just the rafting bit! I was left waiting around for close to 3.5hrs. They were taken by open vehicle from the site to the river drop off point about 15 minutes away, then had to walk down approx 500 steep and slippery steps. The rafting then followed which they enjoyed, with moderate white water and gorgeous views. Halfway down the river they stopped at a waterfall and were offered drinks (at a fairly steep price). At the end of the rafting they then had to climb up another approx 350 steep steps and were exhausted by the time they got to the top. A decent degree of fitness is required due to all the steps, and they witnessed someone turn an ankle, so be aware. I saw many families get tickets with young children and elderly included which would suggest they weren't made aware of what was involved. I would not recommend this for anyone under 13 or 14, or elderly unless they were very fit. The food provided after was tasty enough but with little choice (and who knows how long it had been sitting in the Bain Marie's)

One of the best activities with family because of the balance of physical coordination and not demanding. Great holiday activity that offers loads of views in the rainforest, stone carvings on the rocks right next to the river, sights of resorts along the way, and some interaction with fellow travellers.
Our boat lead, Ayung, was a relatively quiet and strong personality. He was able to steer the inflatable raft steadily and confidently, watching for our safety very well. Even provided opportunities for us to jump into the river while the raft was moving !
Teenage daughter was in awe of the activity as we live in the city and she never had the chance to do this until now. Lunch was a simple buffet but delicious. I would rate this better than Mount Batur trekking by a long mile due to the preference of my family.

First off, we made a poor judgement, trusted the travel agency and took our 5, 7 and 9 yr old along. This activity is NOT SUITED for kids younger than 10. I was very split with the experience. The first couple of rapids were approached recklessly, kids almost flew out, boat ahead of us capsized, everyone panicked. Not cool, especially if your kids also panic as a result. I was ready to call it quits and cancel the rest of the journey. We had a serious chat with the guide and he assured us the rest of the journey was not as fast/bumpy and that the risk of the kids falling out was minimal. We ended up enjoying the rest of the journey but we were left with a bitter after taste… I didn’t think we were well informed (about the risks) nor were we well instructed (half of the time it was unclear whether or not to paddle). I also felt the whole thing was not professional enough nor was there enough emphasis on our safety or the safety of the kids. Our guide did his absolute best to keep the mood positive and the kids relaxed but still… it didn’t feel quite right… my advice, inform yourself well about the safety measures taken and probably go for another agency

I had a terrible experience. They took us down steep dangerous stairs down a cliff that we weren't told about and it had rained so it was slippery and they were made of stone. There are no railings or safety measures like some rafting places have. I ended up slipping on a very slippery step halfway down the climb and falling 20 feet backwards off the cliff, i almost fell an additional 50 feet if i didnt grab a tree branch in time, which ripped my shoulder out of its socket. I sustained multiple injuries, the people who came to rescue me were not properly trained for it and further worsened any spinal injury I had. Two of the "rescuers" almost slipped on the stairs and almost dropped me while I was on the rescue board. I was transported to a hospital nearby that did not know what they were doing, did not take proper procedure for cranial and spinal injury, and did not have modern machinery to deduce how severe the injuries were. I couldnt even walk or sit up, i thought i lost my ability to but it turns out my spine was just secerly inflammed from the fall. Also they took my shoes while I was being transported and said I had to pay for them back the next day if I wanted them, what a scam. Also their insurance only covers like $600 USD and only covers like scrapes and broken bones. This experience ruined my trip, I had to cancel any other activities, fly home in excruciating pain, and now I'm all the hospital in America getting checked out. I have scrapes and bruises all over my body, my one ankle I can't walk on, the other is so swollen it hurts to put weight on, my right shoulder is torn completely, I have a huge bump on my head and have dizziness and confusion sometimes even though my concussion is gone, my ears are torn up from cuts, I can barely move my back and neck bc of how badly they were injured. This will cost me thousands of dollars just to treat, it was such a traumatic experience and they knew that those stairs were dangerous but took people down it anyway without warning. I believe I only survived the fall bc I had a helmet and life jacket on to cushion some of the fall and that I stopped myself from falling the additional 50ft, otherwise I would be dead and not writing this. This company is negligent and only cares about money.

Such an amazing adventure. The walk through the rice paddies and jungle to get to the river was stunning. The rapids were beautiful and cool and our experienced guide took great care to navigate them to get the maximum rush safely. It’s a brilliant way to see parts of Ubud you might not normally see.
There are 28 flights of stairs going down to and up from the river so you will feel it.

My husband, 15 year old son and I went white water rafting with Graha a couple of weeks ago. Despite torrential rain that had started as soon as we got in the boat, the first half of the trip was great with absolutely stunning scenery. Unfortunately heavy rain the day before (and while we were in the boat) probably changed the conditions of the river – other rafters later told us that the conditions had been upgraded to an ‘orange’ rating. Regardless, in a particularly fast group of rapids, we hit a rock and capsized. My son was underneath the boat and eventually popped out, but it was really scary wondering where he was, particularly as the river was flowing incredibly quickly – so fast it had pulled my husband’s wedding ring off. I unfortunately lost my grip and was swept downstream, but eventually was able to swim to another boat and wait for my crew to pick me up. It was a pretty scary experience - luckily we were wearing the provided lifejackets and helmets however the safety briefing had been extremely limited. Our guide was very worried for our safety, trying his hardest to look after us. In hindsight, I hadn’t considered that doing an adventure activity in Bali has different safety procedures than in countries like Australia. I would not do this with young children or anyone who can’t swim.

Rafting itself rather pleasant as was the staff. Rather a nice surprise for the food. Extremely disappointed, however, with the pricing policy which varies from 1 to 5. It is not acceptable to ask for more than a million rupees from some and 230,000 from others!!!! Even if bargaining is usual, when we are caught red-handed, we fall in line... this practice is unpleasant and penalizing for everyone...

Rafting was a fun and worthwhile excursion while in Ubud. The guides at Graha are friendly and professional and the rafting tour was a highlight of our time in Ubud. There is a bit of hiking down to the river as well as back up but definitely worth the hassle. Make it a point to try this while you’re in Ubud.

Our family loved this. Our 17-year old son requested this and both of us parents are 50. Great fun for all of us. Our guide, Kiplin, was great and made the ride very fun. Not being the rainy season we didn't have any huge rapids (the largest are in December) but had plenty to keep it great fun. There are quite a few steps to get down to the river (almost 200?) and they said about half that on the way back up. That is something to be aware of if you have bad knees etc. Highly recommend this company and experience.

An amazing experience! The guides were so friendly and made the time so interactive and fun. There’s quite a few steps to do to get to and from the river but it is well worth it. You get amazing views and get to swim in a waterfall during it and good food afterwards. Would recommend!

is there any other water rafting places where you dont have to walk down lots of stairs because I have a bad leg
Written 12 July 2016
Viv, I agree with Jacinta. Lots of steps are one thing but having a bad leg... while white water rafting .... in a river.... in Bali? I would suggest giving it a miss until your leg is stronger.
