This small museum at the north end of Sanur Beach evokes a time of innocence and beauty before the introduction of relatively recent laws banning "immodest dress." Even more impressive than the paintings by the Belgian artist of the young Balinese dancer he married and her friends is the small mansion in which the art and artifacts are housed: a lovely example of Balinese architecture decorated with finely carved and gilded wooden shutters.

It was nice to visit this museum to get an understanding of the work of Le Mayeur. The entrance is very low only 20k rupia ( about $1.50). Nice paintings and woodcarvings. Some paintings need some restoration I assume.

Walking along the beach path found this place...it is not being kept up all that well but was a very interesting little stop along the way. After reading about it before I went you could almost see the storey unfold of the artist and the...More

A small museum which is tucked away in his old house and explores the love story between the artist and his Balinese lover. Very interesting.

Authentic museum and artist's house in Sanur. It's all rather faded but in a good way. Not overly restored. Lovely garden and paintings.

Spent a lazy afternoon wandering around the Le Mayeur Museum. A beautiful place with exquisite furnishings and paintings that have sadly been left to decay. To close your eyes an imagine a time in history when this compound was at its glory, is nevertheless a...More

Interesting glimpse of part of Bali's past, and the buildings themselves are interesting. Paintings themselves aren't very well displayed - poor lighting and reflective glass.

If there was ever an understated treasure this is it. Tucked away at the northern end of the main beach area at Sanur, this museum is one of the greatest treasures that Sanur has to offer. And yet I wonder how many people know about...More

What a shame that such an interesting piece of Bali's art history is not well maintained. Many of the glass boxes that many of the pieces are in are dirty and obviously not opened and cleaned very often. The lighting was so poor that it...More

This was a fascinating visit. The beautiful buildings and furniture are redolent of times past, when balinese carving and decoration were at top level. The paintings show Sanur as it was, and it was dreamy to imagine the wonderful lifestyle Le Mayeur experienced living in...More

at the north end of Sanur just past the Bali Beach Hotel it is a lovely walk as the avenue is wide and tree shaded or you can ride a bike - my husband usually hires one for the month so rides everywhere but I like to walk
