About
Overview - Join a cooking class with charming chef Maria in her home. Start off with a market tour before whipping up 5 classic Indonesian / Balinese dishes of your choosing. You'll even get her secret recipes so you can make them at home. Highlights- Local Market Tour in the Morning (100% non-touristy) Choose up to 5 dishes to make in one lesson Enjoy the authentic, local atmosphere of Maria's home Detailed recipes with photos included so you can make your favorite dishes at home! Flexible scheduling Description - While my classes are flexible and the start time can be tweaked upon request, if possible, I recommend starting our day at 8.30am with a market tour in the morning at the new Kuta market (Pasar Kuta Bahru, which is walking distance from my house), where you will get to see fresh produce and oogle at the offerings. I will explain the unique ingredients on sale. After the tour, we will return to my house where my class will cover 3 dishes of your choosing while Maria chooses 2 dishes. Just so you are able to replicate the results when you get home, I will give you detailed recipes and photos of the spices we use. Some of my most popular dishes include: - Beef Rendang (beef cooked in coconut milk and chilli paste) - Chicken Sate with Peanut Sauce - Nasi Goreng (fried rice) - Chicken Bumbu Bali (Spicy Chicken soup) - Gado-gado with peanut sauce - Fish pepes (Fish and spice, wrapped in banana leaf, then steamed) - Chicken Betutu I look forward to seeing you in my kitchen soon!

Humble Bali Cooking Experience with Maria
Jan. 2020
It was truly a local balinese cooking experience at Maria's home. She was very welcoming and willingly shared all her recipes with us even though we were supposed to pick only 5 dishes to cook. Although it was a tad tiring to be preparing and cooking for 5 hours, it was definitely an experience not to be missed. Do not expect fancy layout, super clean utensils for cooking or ingredients well prepared in advance.

Fantastic authentic food class

We had such a good time with Maria, only the 2 of us, so it was intimate too. Maria took us to the local market, bought extra tropical fruits for us to try. If you want to cook everything yourself step by step in a relaxing mode - this class is perfect. Maria also has a great room with aircon which was highly appreciated due to very warm weather that day :)
Thanks for having us Maria - your dishes were delicious - take the grilled fish option too (Amazing)
Hope to see you again next trip in Bali for another course ;)

Authentic recipes and experience
Oct. 2019 • Couples
Highly recommend Maria's cooking class.
We booked at very late notice and Maria was very accommodating. We got to select the dishes we wanted to make (important as we really wanted to learn beef rendang and nasi goreng from scratch)... which made it very personalised for us.

As you cook at Maria's house, it felt like this was a really authentic "experience" compared to the cooking classes held in hotels or restaurants. The dishes were delicious and generous, and Maria complemented our dishes with a couple she chose. She educated us on the different spices and varieties in the ginger family, and on their medicinal uses, as well as providing clear instructions for her dishes.

We found this great value for money, bonus being all of the extra recipes Maria gives you. Happy that we also supported a local - book direct (via Facebook/WhatsApp) if possible.

Very special, authentic cooking class
Oct. 2019
We took a cooking class with Maria and is was a great experience. She really tried to do the dishes we asked her to cook with us and answered every question beyond the course about culture and cooking. We were picked up by this lovely lady and she showed us the local market and explained everything. The class was held in her house in kuta what was an authentic experience too. We prepared several dishes and got all of her receipes too. Maria was helpful also with buying some of the ingredients and cooking tools. All together an amazing experience with such an individual course i never had before. Me and my two daughtrs relly enjoyed it and i could recommend to everyone! She is also one of the best deals in Kuta!

Best cooking class in Bali!
May 2019 • Couples
We took a cooking class with this lovely lady .
She picks you up at the hotel and brings you home afterwards. You can choose the recipes you would like to cook, she picks another two additional recipies.
She shows everything and gives information about the ingrediënts. It was a great experience! We've could have take a cooking class in our hotel but is was way more expensive and less personal.
We enjoyed it and the meals were delicious!

Please take notice: If you make a booking please dont cancel last minute! She will be stuck with the groceries and costs her a lot of money!

She would also like to cook for people at home in any country, but she does'nt have the money for travelling. Maybe a good sponsor or crowdfunding can help her?

The best cooking class in Bali!

Please take note: if you make a booking and you cancel this last minute

Best decision ever...
May 2019 • Couples
We decided we wanted to do a cooking class before we got to Bali as we both love Indonesian/Balinese food.

After reading a couple of reviews the choice for Maria's class was easy because of her wide range of recipes to choose from. We contacted Maria via Whatsapp and an appointment was easily made. We skipped the market visit so the fee was IDR 550000 p.p. which is a steal compared to other cooking classes offered in the neighborhood including our hotel.

Maria picked us up in our hotel lobby at 1100 and we spent about the rest of the day until around 1730 at her place cooking our choice of dishes, she included a clear soup, an other satay sauce used for gado-gado and vegetable fritters which combined with the satay sauce was delicious!

Our dishes:

Mie Goreng
Chicken satay with peanut sauce
Chicken serundeng
Beef rendang
Spring rolls

The only word that comes to mind is excellent. Clear instructions, hands on with the food and clear explanation of the ingredients. You get all 40 something recipes and she will let you take pictures of everything for clarity and as a reminder.

Every dish we made oozed flavour and was better than almost every restaurant we have visited here in Bali.

If you want authentic recipes, and an authentic experience look no further. Do not let your preconceptions get in the way of an amazing experience with a truly lovely lady.

After we finished, she even accompanied us to a local supermarket to buy some equipment and ingredients to take home.

In short: if you are considering a cooking class, Maria is the real deal.

Slow and overpriced, but at least she has rendang
Apr. 2019 • Family
We originally picked this cooking school over others because it was private and she included rendang in her recipes. However, the whole experience was pretty disappointing and I feel a bit ripped off.

Prior to arriving in Bali, I exchanged numerous emails with her, explaining that my husband is already familiar with Indonesian food and cooking, so no need to treat him like a beginner. He moves very quickly, so if there was time, he could make more dishes. I also let her know that I will be occupied minding my 3 yr old and 1 yr old, so I would not be cooking. She agreed to all of this.

Upon arrival, it was apparent that nothing we discussed was going to be honored. She moved extremely slow from the start. Before we even began, she was rummaging around her things and kept disappearing into her other kitchen. She was constantly shuffling through her recipes and name cards (that were strewn about in a pile on the floor). I'm not sure how you operate a cooking school for so many years and you don't know any of your recipes. There was no prep work of any kind done--very disorganized.

She was very distracted by the presence of children. My baby was eating an orange and she spent 10 minutes wiping her face and floor. I am not paying her to mind my child, but she kept fussing over them rather than teach her class.

When she finally started cooking, she ever so slowly insisted on plating every ingredient and would fuss about minute details like a pinch of garlic or a misshapen shallot. She even tried to tell us "this is cumin. you can smell it." We kept repeating, we know, we cook Asian food all the time. We are familiar. We even asked her to stop plating, and to stop rummaging around the pile of labels. I told her to just cook like she normally would, but she kept doing it.

So, she would plate, then swap out the whole spices for pre-mashed ones, then remove some from the mortar, and remash some other things. She had a teaching kitchen outside and her real kitchen inside. Despite running a cooking school, she only had one wok to cook from and kept taking it back to her house for 10 min to wash it in between dishes. Why didn't she have extras to save time? She also had no trash can anywhere near the prep area. I tried to help out and put trash in a plastic bag that could be thrown out later, but she took that away after I put a single orange peel in it.

We were told we'd cook 5 dishes + 2 of her choosing but after 4 hrs of her dragging on, she said there was 'no time.' We kept trying to go faster and encourage her to move along but she just wouldn't.

I did no cooking at all, besides peeling one carrot to try and save time, but we were still charged for 2 people (600k each) plus transportation (300k). Total 1.5m IDR.

Maria’s cooking class
Feb. 2019 • Couples
Had a fantastic morning cooking with Maria. If you want an authentic home style cooking class this is for you. Was like cooking with grandma. We cooked vege fritters, beef rendang, grilled fish, mie goreng and Javanese chicken. Food tasted amazing and can’t wait to try it out when we get home. Maria gave us 40 recipes, make sure you take photos of the quantities as you go, or photos of her book with the pictures. Sparrow, we know your secret recepes 😝

Local cooking class
Sep. 2018 • Couples
Maria picked us up at our hotel with a taxi. We went to a market hall and she bought what we need for our selected dishes. She also showed and explained us some fruits and vegetables we might not know. Also bought some for tasting later :)

She took us to he small room where the class took place. Really nice and an area of local people. You also see where the people here life. Maria is very nice and she explained us a lot about the Indonesian food. All different tastes and smells and she also gave us some spices we don't find in our normal supermarket at home.

The class was really interesting and the food tasty. Don't expect a high class kitchen it is just her local place.

Great food and "unique" recipes!
Aug. 2018 • Solo
I booked the class through my hotel for convenience, but would be cheaper booking direct. Even though I was the only person, Maria put on the class. Unlike any other class, I was able to pick 5 dishes to make from a list of 40. The food tasted amazing, and the Beef Rendang the best I have had. I loved the way she measured the quantities for each ingredient, done visually on the cobek so the meal would be perfectly balanced. Maria is very kind, and after the class she went to the markets and sourced a traditional cobek and ulekan for me, which she dropped at the hotel. Maria, thank-you for an amazing last day in Bali and all the wonderful recipes you shared.
