Once you take a dip in holy waters of Mathura, you feel Nirvana and you feel now the urge to chase the materialistic stuff in daily life and that's when sitting in boat, floating swiftly in the mid of river Yamuna, I got stuck with the idea let me know more about the place, more than what I know of this place as a native. That's when someone guided me to the Government Museum. Frankly after being thoroughly disappointed with administration of city I had no high hopes from the place but to my surprise its one of the best managed places and gives you a beautiful walkthrough down the history lanes and gives an amazing view of history of country, Mathura and even my community so some extent. I am yet not over and again planning to spend even more time during my next visit.

The museum was on my 'to see' list but I did not make it! I was so frustrated by the holy 'Krishna belt' of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, that I left the area early. These are must see places for a devout Hindu. But I realized that my was devotion was not deep enough to make me overlook the bad roads, lack of signage, over-flowing and open sewers, unruly traffic plus missing policemen, and the general poor maintenance and upkeep of places. The temples are beautiful, and the city ruins them.
The place is completely disorganized. Young men randomly stop you along the way and offer to serve as a guide. They know little, but it is helpful to take them along, at least for directions to places. There are no usable public toilets in cities/towns that attract throngs. Shopkeepers have usurped large parts of the road, and broad roads have become less than one usable lane wide.
The local administration needs to hang its head in shame for how it has allowed a hallowed and mythologically revered place to deteriorate.

The Government Museum Mathura, located at Dampier Park, is today one of the leading centers for research, study and the preservation of heritage of art. The museum is build in red sandstone.
The curator informed that the museum has the largest collection of stone sculptures, and also a collection of terracotta, gold, silver and copper coins, clay seals, ancient pottery, paintings and bronzes. At the time of our visit, renovation work was was going on and all we could find there was Stones all around.....
Museum visiting hours are from 10.30 AM to 4.30 PM. It is closed on Monday, and every second Sunday of every month and other Govt. gazetted holidays. Ticket price is Rs. 25/- for Foreigners and Rs. 5/- for Indians. They charge Rs. 20/- for Camera.

Mathura School of Art flourished around Mathura from 1st century -A.D. to 6th century A.D., in particular during the reign of the Kushans. Mathura museum houses some of the finest sculptures of India from 2nd century B.C. to 8th century A. D. spanning the period of Mauryas & Guptas. Feminine beauty- apsaras, nymphs & tree goddess (Shailbhanjika) in particular were captured in stone with delicacy, charm & exquisite craftsmanship. This was the only place in Mathura that I could physically see the history of the city over millennia. The historical sites in the rest of the city have largely been destroyed over the ages and heavily built over, making them only of value to those who have a sense of devotion. The museum is the best place for people interested in the true antiquity of the city.
It is fairly well maintained, although better lighting is greatly needed in some sections. Certainly worth a 1-2 hour visit.

Excellent museum at the city of mathura, excellent collection of artifacts and that showcase the history of ancient india. One good place to visit if you are going to mathura.

The various sculptures in the museum were nice. The place was frequently visited by various school children. It seems that they are not having power backup as it was dark inside the museum during power failure when we visited the museum.

The artefacts kept in this museum portray some 2000 years of history in and around Mathura city. Sculptures of Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha and several other dieties and paintings are kept on display. An history enthusiast will have very nice time here, feeling pages of history unfold.

It is situated in Dampier Nagar and nicely laid and maintained. more guidance needed to attract visitors. place is rarely have crow and definitly a place for learning

Mathura museum is an archaeological museum in Mathura city. There was artifacts pottery, sculptures, paintings, and coins in collection. Good place for visit with kids.
