During our Varanasi trip, we went for a day trip to Sarnath .
After visiting the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar , our next stop was Dhamek Stupa.
In fact, both the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and Dhamek Stupa remains side by side .
We walked through beautiful garden at the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and reached Dhamek Stupa within few minutes.
Dhamek Stupa is said to have been built in the year 500 CE while the construction was ordered by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd Century BC.
There’s a small museum right after the entrance which has a few basic details of the monument.
The monument is under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is well-maintained with manicured gardens and benches with trees 🌳🌿 .
Dhamek Stupa is one of the renowned historical sites in Sarnath. Built with stones and red bricks, the structure of Dhamek Stupa is cylindrical in shape. The lower part is wholly adorned with stunning carved stones.
Besides, the entire structure of this stupa stands comfortably at an imposing height of 43.6 m along with the base diameter of 28 m. Along with that, the complex includes a total of 8 niches each facing a different direction.
Another main feature of this historical architecture are the inscriptions in the Brahmi Script. Magnificently carved humans and birds figures can also be seen at Dhamek Stupa.
Over-all, a great historical Buddhist site at Sarnath .
😍😍😍
This is a MUST vist site in your Sarnath itinerary .
I strongly recommend this place to visit at Sarnath ! 👍👍

Dhamek Stupa is the main attraction at the Sarnath site 13 kms from Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. Dhamek Stupa also called as Dhamekh means the Stupa of the reign of Dharma is a massive stupa. Buddha gave his first sermon at this place to his 5 disciples after attaining enlightenment to show the path of nirvana. The Dhamek Stupa was built in 500 CE to replace an earlier structure by the great Mauryan king Ashoka along with several other monuments to commemorate the Buddha's activities in this location. Stupas originated as circular mounds encircled by large stones. Ashoka pillar with an edict engraved on it stands near the site.

Located 13 km from Varanasi, it is the most remarkable structure in Sarnath. Built by Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty, It’s a massive cylindrical structure measuring 28m in diameter and 43.6 meters in height,
why it's so famous, especially among Buddhists: it marks the spot where Lord Buddha preached the first sermon to His five disciples after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. Buddhist pilgrims from around the world visit Sarnath to circumambulate the holy Stupa and worship Lord Buddha. National and international tourists also flock to Sarnath to get a glimpse of Buddhist architecture and culture at this significant center of Buddhism.
The word Dhamek is a distorted form of Dharma Chakra that means “turning the wheel of the Dharma”. Buddha’s first sermon was on the “Wheel of Law”, which might be the reason for the name.
You can hire a cab, auto, or even a rickshaw from the hotel depending on the distance from the hotel to reach the spot. we hired a tuk-tuk :)
Basic facilities are there but don't expect much. it was some 25/PP fee

It is located at Sarnath about 12 km from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was originally built by King Ashoka in 249 BCE. Again it was rebuilt in 500 CE to commemorate Buddha's teachings. It is a very popular pilgrimage place for Buddhists because Lord Buddha preached the first sermons to His 5 disciples over her after attaining enlightenment. It is a massive stupa, height 43.6 meters and diameter 28 meters. It is built with bricks and red stone. Now days it is maintained very well with beautiful lawn surrounding it.
Worth visiting !!

This is the place where Buddha gave his first sermon to his followers. Later king Asoka built this stupa. Most of the old structure has been restored. Only a short distance from Varanasi, this whole complex is worth a visit.

This stupa can be an exceptional thing for those who have never seen one of such large dimensions, because there are hundreds of small ones around Varanasi, but it is very normal for those who have already been to Cambodia.
It is located in Sarnath park, so if you visit one you will necessarily visit the other too.
In any case, it's worth seeing.

The Dhamek Stupa is a Budhhist stupa inside the Sarnath archaeological park. This stupa is said to mark the spot where the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The stupa is of a simple design, being a large cylindrical structure with a diameter of about 30 metres. That doesn’t stop buddhists from paying their respects at the site. There’s a steady stream of buddhists placing candles at the stupa and meditating close to the stupa.
