Dear friends,
This temple complex is mentioned in Taj Mahal is a Hindu Shiv mandir by late P N Oak. He had connected it because of the inscription found in the garden of Taj Mahal (Ref. Asi report 1874 vol 4,by Karlael asst to Gen Kannigham) there is another mention of this inscription called Baghari inscription. So many believe the description pertains to Taj Mahal some are of the opinion that it could be near the capital city of Chandel clan Mahoba (MP) The inscription called Bateshwar inscription which is kept in Lucknow state museum, is actually should be called Agra inscription. No one could bring the inscription from Bateshwar to Agra Tejaji temple or to Baghari near Mahoba where there is no temple of this description.
Leaving all, the site is pleasant and creates great respect to the construction makers. We give credit to the person who paid for the construction. He might not have visited during the construction, or involved in planning to execution. He might not have been done actual spade work, yet the name shines for centuries.

At banks of Yamuna river, spirituality and culture meets at this spot. Perfectly hidden spot which is actually a holy place with immense religious significance and whose riverfront is decorated by 51 Shiv Temples along the riverbank. First glimpse of the clean ghats will make you fall in love with the place.
The temple has the only statue of its kind in the world where God Shiv has a big moustache and is dressed like a wealthy merchant. Also, Bateshwar is the ancestral village of former prime minister Atal Bihari and his ashes were immersed at Bateshwar Ghats.

I visited here, beguiled by the fabulous photographs I had seen of these ancient Shiva Temples sitting on the banks of the Yamuna river.
Bateshwar lies about 60 kms from Agra.
The squalid small bazaar in front of the Temple entrance is unpleasant as is the expanse of litter strewn wasteland.
I entered a section to the left under an arch where sadhus sat & wandered amidst utter filth, litter & excrement of several varieties.
Descending the ghat I beheld a stinking stretch of the Yamuna river, the exposed shore utterly choked with litter. A decrepit wooden ferry floated by the bank & women washed some clothes- good luck with that! Plenty of Sadhus around the small shrines, flies, too. Some stalls selling puja items & to one side a man peeing up the back of a shop.
I did not bother venturing further along.
If you come at night I ' m sure it looks magical & the camera can always make a scene look good but I'm here to say it is UTTERLY FILTHY.
Only reason I gave this rating & not lower is because the place has an interesting history & I did derive some sort of ghoulish pleasure from my visit.

Bateshwar is around 60 km from Agra and if you love travelling / driving, it is definitely worth a visit from Agra. Do carry eatables as you may not get much to eat here (if you are not used and don't want to take the risk of roadside eateries ;-) .. )

The road is very good and it takes a little over 1 hr to reach here. Also close by (around 25-30 km away) is Chambal Sanctuary famous for alligators and gharials.

As per the literature, there are 108 temples of Lord Shiva on the banks of Yamuna. Temples are very old and constant bhajans (hymns) are soothing to the mind.

Great view of the Yamuna from here. Also heard that the Yamuna meets the chambal a few kms from here, but didn't see it.

I always had the desire to visit Bateshwar, the abode of Shiva while crossing Agra - Lucknow expressway and finally made a decision to take a detour one day and it was worth it.

Its a set of some 40 temples out of which only few can be visited but the place is so peaceful on the banks of Yamuna that it attracts you towards it.It is generally not very crowded and one can sit on the banks of Yamuna in the early morning or evenings.

Do carry your own stuff to eat and there are no proper toilets and stay arrangements.I wish such an important place (mentioned in many religious scriptures) is better maintained!

Was at this place with one of my friends. Liberally liked kind of loneliness of this secluded place. There used to be 101 temples but now only about 20 of them exist. We just visited some of them and I loved watching different sized turtles which are known as vehicle of Goddess Yamuna.

Better not to even think of. Not even T in the name of tourism. What you see on websites is all nonsense. Nothing worth visiting except negligence and govt appathy. Better stay at Agra and enjoy.
