Surya Gate is the second of four gates that you have to go through in the Golden Fort before you reach the palace. It is the most imposing and certainly the most photographed. That is why it also the spot where hawkers and musicians gather to make a living out of passing tourists.

The Surya Gate is one of the four entry gates of Jaisalmer Fort. Visitors need to pass through the gate. The gate is adorned with stone carvings which depict historical art. Surya gate is built on a bend. This imposing narrow gate was built to prevent entry of enemies. The area is lined with small shops that sell various Rajasthani items.

The concept of the curved and narrow entrance into the Jaisalmer fort was to prevent enemies from being able to charge properly into the fort and to prohibit their ability to use a battering ram I suppose. We were so very impressed with the ingenuity of this idea for defending a walled city and fort that we found this to be a very interesting minor attraction to Jaisalmer.
There isn't much but a entrance that becomes just wide enough for a small car to pass that curves hard right and then 180 degrees hard left in order to get to the proper entrance to the fort. You can just imagine how awkward that would have been for opposing enemies attempting to take the fort in centuries past.
As you are primarily going to Jaisalmer to see the fort, you will have to pass through this entrance anyway so its impossible to miss. We recommend spending a few minutes to appreciate its design and concept, thinking of its significance to the long-standing defense of this 850+ yr old fort. The Surya Gate is one of the primary reasons this fort has remained in tact.

This gate is one of the many gates we go through while walking to the fortress. This is a beautifully carved gate. This is majestic and huge.

As per the normal defense mechanism, a fort gate should not be visible from outside, but only from a difficult angle; and inside the fort, one gate cannot be seen from another gate, so as to confuse the attacker. This gate is no exception.

This is probably the largest gate, Each of the next three seem to get narrower and narrower as you climb steadily up to the Fort proper. Go carefully through the next three as cars, bikes, motorcycles, taxis. jeeps, rickshaws cattle, dogs and people all try to go both ways through the narrow gates all at the same time. Each gate is through about 10-20 metres of rock/sandstone wall. The horn blasting can get quite ear piercing!.

This is one of the gates while entering Jaisalmer Fort. All forts have a series of gates, and this happens to be one of them with a temple at the gate dedicated to the Sun God. The series of gates is so constructed that accessing force can not see more than one gate at a time. Each gate is located at an angle or sharp turn from the other so that advancement of any force is well broken and can be attacked from inside with advantage.
The guide informed us that the first sun rays over the city used to hit this very gate, and that's why the name of the gate is as such.
