- arzanstudioMumbai, India350 contributionsA very interesting fort with well preserved internal rooms.A very well kept and maintained fort, housing the palace within along with corridors and rooms full of memorabilia from the past era. Not as overpowering and glamorous as the Jodhpur fort, but still definitely worth spending a few hours within its walls. Being very practical, they have installed an elevator for those who can’t climb up, which is a superb thing to have. The rooms with the mirrors and the hand painted tiles are very well preserved and give you a good idea of the pomp and luxury the royal families would be enjoying. Threes even a single propellor plane inside which was gifted to the maharaja by the British. One very small but interesting object I found inside was a spoon designed for the Maharaja as he had a huge moustache. It was designs in a way he could have his soup without soiling the moustache. Very ingenious. Interesting pieces of furniture and glass ware can be seen too.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 December 2023
- Shailesh TNew Delhi, India19 contributionsFull marks for the upkeepJunagadh Fort is a beautiful fort. Well maintained by the royal family, it is an artist's delight. Intricate designs on its walls, beautifully carved jharokha windows, open spaces carved out majestically and a riot of colours in all the artwork, albeit very subtle. The fort has a lift too, but even otherwise you need to climb a not so steep ramp and then a few stairs only. It is one fort in Rajasthan that is not atop a hill. The museum is avoidable. Saw a rare sight there - a woman guide!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 January 2024

The fort is a true example of modernity blends away tradition. The rule of this fort were very dynamic in their thinking which results in the very modern architecture during that time also. The entry fees includes a guide as well however the guides are not very good. If you want to understand in depth about the fort & rulers then you should take a guide separately.

One of the very few forts in Rajasthan which was not built on a hill. The architecture is very beautiful and there are numerous palaces, courtyards, balconies and temples. The main attractions are Karan Mahal, Phool Mahal, Anup Mahal, Chandra Mahal, Ganga Mahal and Badal Mahal. There is also a museum displaying manuscripts, paintings, costumes, weapons, etc. Hire a guide if you want to know all the history associated with this fort and it will take a couple of hours to cover the entire fort.

Fort situated on ground in the centre of the city talks about the Grandeur of this city its heritage and culture and the lifestyle of its erstwhile rulers.. tour will take 2 hours easliy ...do take a guide along else you may be lost or may not know the significance of many things displayed there. Vasim Ahemad is a good knowlegable and a humble guide you can look out for him over there...overall a good historical place to start your day

We had an excellent tour guide and the fort was not too crowded when we went, so were able to enjoy all the beautiful mahals and learn about this unique fort that is not built on a hill like most other Rajasthani forts. It used to be surrounded by a moat that contained imported crocodiles. It was attached multiple times but never conquered and it the palaces within the fort have been built by each successive ruler. One of my favourites was badal mahal which depicts clouds, lighting, and rain to teach children about the rare event which was to be celebrated in the desert city. I also learned a lot about the weapons used by the Rajput warriors and the great accomplishments of Maharaja Gangasinghji. I highly recommend visiting this fort during a trip to Bikaner.

The fort was earlier called ‘Chintamani’ but after Royal family moved to Lagarh Palace, it was named as Junagarh. Constructed in 15th century, this is one of the forts of Rajasthan which is made at ground level.
The fort & place are being preserved as museums which provides visitors a feel of the royal living. Fort is made of red stone whereas inside palace & temples are made of marble with inctricate carvings.
Various ‘mahals’ were added by different rulers from the Royal family. There’s impressive display of weapons used by Maharajas.

This is a nice and well maintained fort. There is a lot of artwork and decorations on the walls, ceilings, doors which can be enjoyed well. This kind of decoration is not there on any other forts in Rajasthan (and it kind of remined us of the Mysore Palace though on a very small scale). But part of the reason is due to the restoration efforts of the trust in repainting the faded sections and cleaning activities which we noticed there.
You don't need a guide to explore and you can go around by yourself. There is another ticket for Prachini Museum which contains items belonging the royal family but that can be skipped unless you have lot of time.
Overall, visit if Bikaner is part of your itinerary.

While in Bikaner, this is a "must visit". This is the only famous fort in Rajasthan which is not on the top of a hill.
Reaching here is not difficult and there is vehicle parking space inside the premises. It is well maintained with some areas restored well. The evolution of the fort with its architecture evolving over generations can be visualised within 2 hours.
The crown piece of the fort is undoubtedly the oldest invaluable sandalwood throne dating back to the Rathodes (from Kannauj to Bikaner).
Our visit was made memorable by our guide Wasim (+91 98290 99847) whom we met outside the gate itself. Besides being proficient in Hindi, English and French, he has a thorough understanding of the history of Bikaner and its culture. With a keen eye for best spots for memorable snaps, he captured our trip in photographs for us in addition. On further enquiring he offered to guide us to authentic Rajasthani food and for shopping. Finally we relieved him only in the evening. The day turned out to be a fully packed, eventful and a memorable one thanks to his help.

It is one of those Forts in Bikaner which tells the complete history of the city. It is almost a 2hr walk through the fort along with the museum. The local guide available there are really good and they will explain you each and everything, also letting you know about the 24 Kings of Bikaner. They are proficient with the language and also photography. If you are lucky enough you can find the difference between Junagadh fort vs any-other fort in Rajasthan.
The architecture and sculpture on each wall, window, roof, door are truly amazing

Written 13 June 2018
You can go to jodhpur first. Visit Jaswant thada (1hr), Meherangadh fort (4/5 hrs), Umed bhawan palace. You will need minimum 1 day for jodhpur.
Next day you can proceed to Jaisalmer. It takes 4/5 hrs to reach. On the way visit war museum (2 hrs) few kms before jaisalmer. You can visit gadisar lake, stay in tents near Sam sand dunes. Its a one of a kind experience. Do camel rides and dont miss the jeep safari early morning. Visit bada bagh, Optionally visit kuldhara ( abandoned village few centuries back). You will need minimum 1 and 1/2 days for jaisalmer.
Next proceed to Bikaner, takes 5/6 hrs from jaisalmer. Junagadh fort is must visit and go to museum as well and will need 4 hrs.

What are the timings to visit Junagarh Fort? Is it recommended to visit during daytime or around 4-5 P.M. to see evening lights if any??
Also, what time should be budgeted to visit the Fort properly . Have two fit senior citizens with me (3 adults)
Written 29 October 2017
it is better to see this fort during daytime to visit all the sections including a museum. I am not sure if there is a light show in the evening but the fort is more beautiful inside rather than from outside so daytime would be better. At least 3 to 4 hours may be required since there is a lot to walk around

yes sir junagarh fort open all day of week

Hello I am planning to visit India in September. Will be taking a car/driver from Delhi . Would your recommend staying one night in Mandawa and then continue to Bikaner or would you skip Mandawa? Also, how is the drive from Delhi/Mandawa and Bikaner? how long it will take on leisurely drive? Bikaner one day is enough? We plan to go form Delhi/Bikaner/Jeselmar/Jodhpur/Nath dwara . Any suggestions will help. Many thanks.

Hi! September may be warm. well I went to Jodhpur, Jaisalmer,Bikaner and back to Mumbai via Jodhpur in Jan end was very chilled. Bikaner one day is more than enough if u visit only d fort and camel farm but if u want to visit Karni Mata Temple then some more time is needed. Nath dwara is near Udaipur i guess then u may add Udaipur too it worth visiting. If u still want to plan i will be happy to guide u.

I am traveling to Bikaner with my wife and 8 year old son in March.
1. how much time does it take to see the fort if not in detail?
2. is a Guide required?
3. is a Audio Visual pass worth ? if yes what are the timings?
Written 12 February 2017
I went to the fort with my Husband and there were no requirement for guide. We purchased the audio guide and I liked it very much. With the audio guide, it took us 3 hours to complete the tour. We learned a lot about the history and really enjoyed the visit.

Hi Maulik
You will probably spend 1 to 2 hours in the Fort. There are two options for guide. An audio one or a local one. They offered their services for 200 rupees for an hour but I am sure you will get it for less.
Across the road from the Entrance is a restaurant called Gallops which does good food and cold drinks.
A five minute drive away is the Bhairon Vilas heritage hotel which is a great place to stay. Has a pool, cafe, restaurant and a bar.
Have a great trip with your family 😎
Written 13 February 2017
The fort timings are 9am -6pm.
Avoid the starting and ending time because of the rush.
The Fort guide takes in people in rounds of 10 mins. All people queued up in 10 minutes are taken by a particular guide to visit around the fort. This should take approximately 2 hrs.
