I was on a journey in India to discover and see new cultures, lifestyle and traditions, and I visited a nomad family in the Thar Desert. The Thar Desert lies to the west of the Aravalli Mountain Range in northwestern India and includes the deserts that cover portions of the Indian states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Punjab, as well as the Punjab and Sind in Pakistan.

What I especially like about this desert is the shifting sand dunes, broken rocks and scrub vegetation. This was a great excitement for me because it is completely different from what I have been used to see. Though the region is arid, there is no dearth of attractions.

Three of the most attractive cities of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner are a part of the Thar Desert.

I did a camel excursion in Thar desert and dunes near Jaisalmer (can't remember the name of the company !). We rode camel for few hours, had lunch and dinner in desert around campfire, and we slept in desert, no tent. View of the sky was amazing ! Camel men were so nice! Each of them has interesting life story. Mine, Hussein, taught me how to "drive" my camel ! If you reach Jasailmer, don't leave without excursion in Dunes.

Most of Rajasthan's land mass falls in the Thar desert. Also, know as the Great Indian Desert. This inhospitable terrain forms a natural boundary between India and Pakistan. Desert safari on a camel is an awesome experience. Be there before sunset for some killer view, drive from city to Sam dunes is very pleasant.

Downside - the place is littered, yup our fault!

Seeing this desert was an amazing experience. It was truly beautiful. My only issue was that when we were on our camel ride, we noticed areas with piles of garbage. It really ruins the beauty of the desert, and someone should clean this up.

Beautiful sceneries and some sand-dunes. Do not expect to find the Sahara Desert here, but you can find some patch of sand-dunes and spend a night or two in the open. The sky is amazing at night especially in the absence of the Moon...

Most people will opt for an organized tour: A major tourist trap in Jaisalmer.

Have in mind that you can find tours for an overnight stay with food and sleep under the stars &Camel ride for 1000-1200Rs (Oct 2018).

The same tours will be sold by hostels, on the street and agencies for 1500-2500Rs. My friends paid 2100Rs and the quality of the amenities was worse that of the tour that costed 1200Rs. So it is a major scam.

There are also other tours that offer tents and entertainment...

I agree this place is quite nice, there are no sand dunes though. We have tried the major attraction - the camel ride, and lunch with locals. All went good at first, my camel was a little young and restless, but I trusted the guide. We get to the home of Mr. Choudhary, had a good lunch in his house full of wasps. On the way back, it almost ended up tragically - my dynamic camel, led only by a boy, went berserk and threw me down. It was without obvious reason - the guy said it was the peacock which is nonsense, (we could see it for 5 mins before the accident).

My suggestion is if your camel seems restless or in a bad day, ask to change the camel. Also if you realise your host is the Choudhary family, be careful.

I visited Rajasthan in late Jan., 2010 as part of a safari trip to India. I stayed for two nghts at the Siana camp and then one night at the Siana Gardens. Both are owned by the same family. The tents were far more than basic, although I wouldn't go later than early March as it gets too hot during the day. The food was very good at lunch and dinner; local Rajasthani specialities predominated. The trekking, which is the main reason to be there (although the natural surroundings are a beautiful combination of desert and small mountains), was exciting (but dress warmly; it's pretty cold when the sun goes down and you're driving along looking for game). I saw one leopard, many hyenas, and various smaller game, all in their natural habitat.

Following an hour long drive from Jaisalmer to the edge of the Thar desert, we enjoyed our camel ride into the Thar desert for about one hour , we then dismounted and took in the beautiful desert sunset whilst sipping tea. Make sure you insist on riding well into the desert , in order to experience the dunes. Some great photo opportunities , of camels and carts silhouetted against the sunset.

The camels appeared to be well looked after and their drivers are experienced -- probably been doing this since their youth.

The trip was well managed, comfortable, safe and worth the money. A must do if you are in the area.

However be aware that nearly everyone does this and hence the desert is very crowded and a little polluted too. There are several desert resorts nearby -- tented and otherwise -- and this adds to the crowds. Let's hope the authorities control the situation before it becomes too much of a good thing.
