Excellent place. The museum gives a really good learning and history about the Role of Indian Navy in the 1971 war. The staff here is really supportive and helps you with a detailed narrative and explanation on all ammunition. The museum hosts proto types as well as original ammunition used by the Navy. It also has an old Helicopter used by the Navy. A great learning place for people interested in this field. There are entry fees of rs 40 per person and the museum remains open till 2 pm.

Depicts naval history, models, and much more. A very well maintained maritime Museum by Indian Navy showcasing prowess of an important arm of Indian armed forces. Nominal entry fee, availability of a small canteen in the premises, clean, and very importantly very well maintained sign board which have QR codes for people wanting further information. Must visit place if you are in Kochi.

It si a beautiful museum which gives plenty of information on the evolution and achievements of Indian Navy. The rich past described includes the achievements of Chalukyas and Cholas in Naval warfare centuries ago. Loads of info is available on the technical aspects too. The visit will make every Indian proud of his country and any keen student of maritime matters will benefit from the information especially on the technical front. The place is extremely well maintained and the staff are very friendly, communicative and courteous. The displays of old ships and choppers in the lawn/garden area provide goof background for pictures. Something we should not miss if in Cochin

The Indian Naval Maritime Museum is a keeper of Indian naval history and is managed by the Indian Navy. The museum contains huge replicas of naval ships and an impressive collection of naval arms and ammunition and showcases the devotion, bravery and selfless services rendered by men of Indian navy. The genesis, evolution and history of the Indian Navy,. Kerala's trade links with Arabs, the aspects of shipbuilding in India etc are also showcased in the museum. The Indian Navy's operations like the Goa liberation and Indo-Pak conflicts of 1965 and 1971, operation Cactus, operation Pawan and the strategic drills during the Kargil war are also showcased here. A group of students also joined us when we visited the museum and they were really interesting in studying the details about the items showcased there.

Visited this place in the morning 11ish. It was pretty hot. The halls are not air conditioned and some flooring repair work is going on currently. We spent little time going through the different photos etc inside the rooms and spent more time looking at the guns/model ships and helicopter. The helicopter was off limits and we could see it beyond the wall. There is a film show that talks about Naval history and recent functions etc, but could not watch it completely due kids, who were completely bored within two minutes. Otherwise it was time well spent. Overall worth a visit.

The distinction in my mind is that a maritime museum covers general nautical issues, rather than purely naval power. Although there is information here about trade patterns and types of ships, the purpose of the museum - to which over 95% of its material is devoted - is to explore the history of the Indian Navy and its forebears, the Royal Indian Navy and the Bombay Marine (in East India Company days).

The fact that it does so at all is fascinating: India's obsession with security is such that I've never found a single military museum in a country with such a full martial history that is open to the public. There is an Air Force Museum in Delhi, but it happens never to be open at advertised times when I've tried to visit it.

So it was almost with a sense of disbelief that as I followed the one sign in Kochi to this poorly advertised museum I realised that it must be an enclave in the Indian Navy's shore establishment INS DRONACHARYA (a name in Hindu mythology redolent of martial prowess).

Digressing back to security, of course one isn't allowed to photograph the ship's gate, but it is difficult to conclude from the ship's crest that DRONACHARYA is anything other than the air defence school for the Indian Navy.

The museum is indeed an enclave as I had supposed, with a flat entry fee (of 40 rupees) for foreigners as well as Indians. There is also a 100 rupee fee for cameras.

The museum is contained mainly in two former bunkers, with some exhibits outside between them and the perimeter wall. The story of the development of naval power in India was well told, with some fascinating material about the emergence of an Indian Navy during the British period.

I found the period following India's independence particularly interesting, especially the area got up as an Ops Room during the first Indo-Pakistan war. The invasion (sorry, do I mean liberation?) of Goa is also well covered; I had forgotten just how much military force India used during that operation. (It is an achievement to have preserved the image of a non-aligned peace-loving nation after such a blatant exercise of force).

Another aspect of the museum which particularly interested me was seeing Soviet equipment not long out of service which I had only previously seen in photographs.

I am extremely glad that I found this museum, which should be trumpeted as well worth visiting. Do note, however, that the museum shuts for lunch, and brush aside the foolish tuk-tuk man outside the gate who stands by his demands for 100 rupees for a ride back to Fort Kochi, when even as a foreigner I secured a ride for 40 rupees (25 being the going rate for Indians).

I have visited quite a few museums till now.
I had quite similar expectations, museum full of scale models and old artifacts, from this museum as well.

But to our surprise this museum had something different to offer.
Enter the gate and you will gate to see several scale models, diffused bombshells and Helicopter retired from service standing out in the open.
When you enter the segment on the left, you will get to see several painting depicting many interesting facts about India in general and about Navy.
It has one room which has sculptures showing history of India in context who entered India like Portuguese, Dutch, Britishers so on so forth.
There is one elder person who guided us throughout and had very deep knowledge about the things.

Then there is all the usual stuff like Uniforms, badges, guns so on so forth.

But as mention in the subject, it has one room full of pictures which has history of rulers of India and how they managed / developed their Navy. It was very interesting to know Indian history in context of Navy.
Also there is another room which has paintings of all the ship types from past to present and their details.
I am not a expert in Naval domain and thus can't comment about correctness about it.
But all I can say is that all that stuff was truly overwhelming.

Must visit if you crave for such information.

This place deserves much morr respect and maintenance..there are ship models and equipment lying in open lawns without sheds..and are pieces of history going to waste. If only the authorities could take notice..its a great place to take kids yo..there are ship steering wheels beacon lights and sailor uniforms to look at..

We spent substantially more time in this museum than we anticipated. There were interesting displays and things were well labelled and described. For no additional charge there was a curator that guided you through the museum and shared lots of pertinent information. We felt it was good use of our time visiting this museum and were happy we chose to go.
