The British demolished the structure and commissioned a new building in 1887. Consecrated in 1905 this was proclaimed a Basilica by the Pope Jhon Paul II in 1984. Thank you for visiting our ancient Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Fort Cochin, built by the Portuguese. What you visited is the second Cathedral, from 1887 to 1905. What you wrote is right. It needs preservation activities. May God bless you. I do appreciate it. Fr Francis MJ Fernandez, St Patrick's Church, Fairlie, South Canterbury, New Zealand. More

Beautiful small cathedral. Murals and decorations painted on the walls give an idea of how European cathedral interiors must have looked in the past.

The basilica, one of the oldest in the country, is an architectural marvel. The tower looks ordinary on the outside, but awesome on the inside. The domes are lavishly decorated and boast exquisitely painted glasses donning the windows. The place is a peaceful place to spend a quiet few minutes. Visitors are allowed between 9 AM and 6 PM on... More

Loved the peacefulness, very interesting interior with beautiful carvings ant statues. The entrance could be improved and a fresh coat of paint would help to lift it's rather jaded appearance..it would have been nice to have someone there who could answer questions. But it's a lovely place to sit awhile and contemplate.

The Church is the major attraction of Fort Kochi with its grand architecture and sombre atmosphere. There is a long history in every fold of the place of worship. It is one of the oldest church in India founded in 1505 by the Portugese. The Dutch spared the demolition but the British finally destroyed the church in 18th century.

Built originally by Portuguese, in fifteenth century, this cathedral withstood vagaries of different rulers and recently announced as basilica, by Pope John Paul II in 1984. It is declared as a house of worship & prayer and not a museum. All the tourists are advised to follow few restrictions, especially, to switch off their mobile phones and enter the church... More
