Pretty amazing view. Definitely an underwhelming hike. It is 5km in total according my map GPS. It can be done in 2hrs easily. If you want a hike you will be very sad. If you want a beautiful viewpoint with minimal exercises, that is the place

Absolutely awesome trek with beautiful sceneries around. This should be attempted by everyone. Though it’s not a difficult trek, but one need to have some level of stamina and fitness to cover this.
Following are the details which can be helpful.
Bookings can be done through KFDC website. There are two kind of stay options available. You can choose to stay in tents (Rs. 3500/- per tent, tent can accommodate two) or in a more proper concrete set-up: Rhodo Mansion (Rs. 6000/- for two)
On the day of reporting, you need to first report to the KFDC office in Munnar. This office is just 3KM from the Munnar Bus Depot. You can even walk till the office, from the depot.
From depot, till the base camp is 26 KMs. If you consider taking Jeep, then you have to shell out Rs. 1000/- per jeep. You can have a negotiation with auto drivers, and get a deal for Rs. 500/-. Only thing is that auto will drop you at a point which is like 2.5KM downhill. You need to walk this distance, till the base camp.
As I stayed in the base camp, so I won’t be writing about the Rhodo Mansion.
At the base camp, you need to do an entry and you will be served with black tea and biscuits. The temperature will be pleasant (I visited in Feb). There are around 20 tents. These tents are set up in layers. So, you might have to walk through the stairs to reach your tent. Washrooms are set up in two places. One near the office, and another near the tent set-up. Water is super cold and hard. There is no provision for getting hot water, so be prepared to manage with ice cold water.
At the evening you can walk around the base camp and enjoy the beautiful sun set. Apart from BSNL, no other network will work here. Even BSNL coverage is available in limited places. Forget about internet.
After the sunset, this places becomes chilly. They provide the sleeping bags only after dinner. So, better carry some warm clothes. Lighting is very dull. So, you need to either use your mobile flash light or torch. I would recommend to carry Power Banks for your mobile. There are very limited points (at dining area), and the entire population there would be attacking them. Keep your camera battery charged as well, and don’t waste much of the juice on Day 1. Day 2 will have absolute beauty in offer. So, save it for Day 2.
KFDC will provide you dinner, breakfast and lunch. Actually they will pack the lunch and give it to you on Day 2, before you start trekking. They won’t provide any water bottles. So, better you carry your water bottles. On the day of trek, they will provide 1 litre bottle for every two individual. So, it’s very much recommended to carry your water bottle.
Travel with minimum weight as I’m not sure whether you have the provision to keep your luggage in the base camp office of not. Basically, you need to check out in the morning before leaving for trek.
Food is decent here. At night they provided chapatis (limited), ghee rice, chicken curry, vegetable korma, rasam etc. At breakfast, it was bread, apple, jam, butter, puttu, chicken curry, pine apple etc. At lunch they packed chapatis (4 no.) and potato carrot vegetable
Entire stretch of the trek is around 19KM. You first need to trek all the way from base camp to Rhodo Mansion. This distance is almost 6-7KM. You will have good views and the trek will lead you through forests, some steep depression, elevations, some moist places, some small waterfalls, pine forest and wild vegetation. The most scenic part of the trek starts post Rhodo Mansion. Also the trek becomes little difficult after this point. But, whatever happens, do not decide to give up the trek from this point. Actual trek begins at this point. You need to trek through 4 hills to reach the summit. The scenery here is unbelievably beautiful. Surely, this will be one of your most memorable treks.
There will be a guide with you, who will take you to the summit and will provide you knowledge about the vegetation and other important aspects of the nature. While descending back, you can opt to travel till base camp from Rhodo Mansion by Jeep. They will charge 1000-1200 per jeep. As you will be tiered, it can be a good idea to take the jeep.
I would also recommend to have your return transportation arranged from the base camp. You can talk with the auto driver and request him to come and pick you up on day 2 or talk with some jeep guy to take you will the Munnar City. We had to struggle a bit as we didn’t manage our return trip. Luckily, we got lift from co-trekkers, but you shouldn’t take that risk. Remember, taking a jeep back will be a very expensive affair. So, better manage with the auto. They might charge you 800-1000, whereas jeep can charge more than 2500/-
Please don't litter while trekking. This place is extremely beautiful, and I request you to help in retaining Meesapulimala it's beauty. There were few couples in our trek group. So you can consider this place to be safe for ladies. But, yes, don't expect 5* comfort here :)

Hello Travelers,
Here is some interesting things to know about Meesapulimala trekking. I have been to the venue recently, I can give you some very interesting things to make your journey pleasant.
First of all you have to board to Munnar and from there to KFDC office nearly 2Km from Munnar town from there you have to take 1000 Rs tickets to go to Meesapulimala
There you will get assistance to board the jeep to base camp. Base camp is about 22km from KFDC office and you have to pay 2000 up and down.so total 3000Rs.
I can give you some more option if you are going by your vehicle take you vehicle near to base camp local people will tell you it is risk to take your vehicle, there is no harm keeping your vehicle near the base camp then you have to walk around 2km from the parking area to base camp anyway you have to trek 8km so including this you have to take 10km walk, by this way you can save 2000 Rs.
The other way is to share the Jeep, at least 8 person can share the jeep but it depends on the crowd some time if there is no one then you have to pay 2000 full amount.
one of the interesting thing is that KFDC is charging 1000 per head to take you to top of the Meesapulimala you will not be getting anything for this only one guide will show you the way to top. The guide's are very good and polite they will tell you some stories and will take you to the venue try to take some food with you there is no shops opened in the jungle, you will get water from creek which is pure and safe to drink.
Its a big hurdle to walk 8 Km inside the forest you will get tired if you don't do enough exercise in your daily life, Leaches is the next biggest problem there are so many leach in the forest don't worry about this monster this will drink some blood from your body and will leave you safe.
After reaching top, its a breath taking scenic, you will feel like you are inside the cloud (actually you are) I will recommend you to see the sun rise or sun set then only it will become a complete view. the guide may tell you to get down quick but dont worry can can easily stay up to 5.30 without any harm after that its bit risk to base camp guys (Rhodo Mansion guys are safe till 6.15).
There is two types of stay arranged in Meesapulimala one is Base camp tent house the other is Rhodo Mansion near to Meesapulimala (hardly 3.5km) I have stayed in base tent it costed me 2000 (2 people) they will provide you food tea and snacks which is not that good, I mean the taste of the food, Quality and quantity is good.
I recomend you to stay in Rhodo Mansion its bit costlier but you have the benefits. Otherwise dont stay in both take a car or bike drive up to base camp contact you guide and move on...

It was a 2 Day trip to Kolukkumalail-Meesapulimala trek (6-7 Aug 2016)
Day 1: to see the sunrise in Kolukkumalai. We reached Suryanelli town, where we will get the 4x4 jeep to top. The Jeep fare may vary from Rs.1100-2500 depends on the season. Just before the Sunrise we reached on the top. No need to say, its going to be one of the beautiful thing you will ever going to see in your life, at a wind speed of 70-80km/hr. i would suggest have a tea and bread sandwich from the tea shop located in the tamilnadu border. Yes it is.
And we have started to the DFO office in Munnar town to get the permit (need to book early) for the Meesapulimala trek.
By afternoon we got the papers ready, as we were travelling on our own vehicle, they have asked us to follow their vehicle (KFDC will arrange vehicle to and back) to the base camp.
Evening we reached the base camp after a short trek, about an hour. At the base camp food and tent accommodation will be provided by KFDC.
Day 2: After having the breakfast we started the uphill climb to the peak (approx 10kms/3hrs away). The first 4 kms was walk through forest, rain and fog will follow you through out. You will reach Rhodo mansion in one and half hour. After a short break the climb will continue to the grass hills with Rhododendron trees. This latter part of trek is the beauty of the whole trek. you are up above to clouds. And the weather will change anytime to sunny or rainy or foggy. The left side of your trek path is a narrow valley that is similar to the himalayan valleys. Right side you will see kolukkumalai tea plantations far away if the clouds are not passing down.
We reached the top by 1Pm, it was completely covered in fog and it was windy. We didnt get a chance to see the 360 view. I would suggest wait sometime, the fog will go and you will get awesome view from the top.
Please Note: Jeep drivers or local people may suggest Rs.100/- pass to enter Meesapulimala from Kolukkumalai, dont entertain them, its illegal, it might end up in caught and fined by the Forest department when you reach the top.

Booking:
Book through KFDC website by munnar dot kfdcecotourism dot com.You can book 3 options Option 1: Base camp tents at Rs 4000 for 2 people: they provide you with sleeping bags and you sleep in tents. Option 2: Sky Cottage at Rs 9000: around 500 meters away from base camp - A secluded studio apartment which will blow your mind away. Option 3: Rhodo mansion at Rs 6000 for 2: another 5 km from base camp with 8-10 cottages.
Getting there:
After reaching Munnar town, take the right towards Devikulam after crossing the small bridge and then after around 500 metres take the left towards - SILENT VALLEY ROAD.
You can collect your permits and passes enroute from the KFDC office (around 4-5 km from Munnar town. They will give you detailed information.
Another 18-20 km, you take the immediate left after you see the board that says Silent Valley hospital and after around 3 kms you see the board that says KFDC Ecotourism base camp. 2km down this road, you reach the base camp.
Can normal vehicles take this road?
Yes they can. Roads till the Silent Valley hospital area is good. not very wide, but not very crowded as well. The 3km after this landmark is slightly off-roadish and the last 2 km to the base camp is definitely off-road. But have seen smaller cars like micra and swift parked at the base camp. So if you drive carefully, i dont think there should be a problem.
But if you have booked Rhoda Mansion, you will have to park your car at Base camp and walk the 5kms. But the KFDC personnel will mostly advice you to park the car at their office in Munnar and hire Jeep for which they will charge Rs1500
Accommodation
I stayed at the sky cottage. It was amazing! It has views to the Anamudi peaks, and the sunsets were just divine. The bedroom roof has a glass tile through which I could see the full moon at night
Tents are good enough if your main intention is the trek to meeshapulimala.
Rhoda mansion has more open area around it (secured through trenches) Trek distance from Rhoda is only 3kms one side
Food
Is average. I normally enjoy the food prepared at forest areas, but this time it was just normal chappathi, chicken, rice and veg curry. Chicken was spicy though
Trek
You can do a complete trek of 8km one side if you are staying at the base camp or sky cottage. but you have one steep hill at the beginning of the trek itself. I took a jeep to cover the first 5km and started my trek from around the Rhoda mansion area.
After climbing the first 500metres, you reach the view point which is amazing.
Another 3km and 7 hills later, you reach the meeshapulimala peak. We saw tiger poop, and elephant dung on the way. Took 1 hour up and down. Fairly moderate trek. We also got to see Niligiri Tahr from a distance.
Tips
The destination offers discounts during monsoons - June/July time
Visit during Full moon if staying at sky cottage
Stay in Rhoda Mansion since the trek gets reduced to 3kms one side.
Try to go during the sunrise. Otherwise the trek normally starts at 7 or so.

Meesapulimala has gained its popularity from the movie charlie and people started getting enough information regarding the place and it gets more popular for its breathtaking views!!
There are two routes to this peak just below Anamudi in terms of its height.
1. Via kolukkumalai
Though this route is still open, its restricted and I wont recommend this route due to varied reasons. The first one being its restricted and second one is that the second route is more enjoyable than the first one and its an amazing trek and you have to experience it.
2. Via KFDC Trek
You have to book any trek program via KFDC to reach meesapulimala. The cheapest and the best one is the base camp plan and the cost is 3000 for two people (Which means 1500 for one). As per the program, you should reach the previous evening at the base camp which is around 20 kilometers from Echo point. They will give that nights dinner, next days breakfast and Lunch. You will be accommodated on a tent on the lush green base camp. You will start trekking after the breakfast next day morning. The entire trek comes around 20 Km To and Fro (we go and come back on different routes). The trek can be considered as a moderate trek and there will be leaches on initial 2 to 3 kilometers at times.
About the trek, during the initial kilometers there is an amazing view point from there you would be able to see 80% of the trek route which is amazing. From there, you will climb hills one by one and you will climb and descend some as well. You will gain height slowly and will finally reach the great Meesapulimala. Some of the hills are very steep and it may tier us out a bit. You can view of the windmills of Tamil nadu while you climb the meesapulimala and from top of the meesapulimala, you would be able to see kolukkumala and the whole view around you..
You can have your lunch on top of the hills (Make sure that you don't put the wastes there.) Coming back was an entirely different seen. You will be walking through dense grass and trees and it would feel entirely like making our own way to go back and its an amazing experience and coming back is quite easy as it descends often and climbs very less. You will see Rhododendron trees while you trek along the Rhodo valley and it would a beautiful experience as well.
You will feel chilled entirely during the trek and there would be heavy mist and fog during rainy season and the best time to visit this attraction would be from October to February.

Trekking towards this 8000 ft was bit heavy for us due to adverse weather conditions. Proposed visitors are warned to abstain from this place if they are not physically fit and if accompanied by family consisting of children and unhealthy people. You need to walk for more than nine KM from the base camp to reach the summit.
Please note that KFDC (Kerala Forest Development Corporation Ltd) is the one and only authority to conduct trekking activities to Meesapulimala . As of now the short cut passage from Kolukkumala is closed. Beware….unauthorized entry to that place will be viewed seriously by the Forest Dept, so it is not advisable to be a trespasser there…!
KFDC has Three package to choose for healthy people.
The details are given below :-
package one is stay at Sky Cottage and second package is a stay at their property situated at Rhodo Mansion (really an isolated wonder) third and the most recommended package(Money-wise) is the base camp. The location of base camp is breathtakingly beautiful and facilities arranged by KFDC were basic .Truly,we don’t go there to seek luxurious amenities. Food was delicious and sleeping bags and tent provided to us were new and in perfect condition.

We, a team of 8 set out to conquer meesapulimala from Calicut. We choose Toyota Innova as our vehicle, and started at 4:30 in the morning. We had our breakfast at Trichur and reached Munnar by 2. We had our lunch at Munnar which was pretty tasteless given the cost of the food.
The Meesapulima trekking programme had to be booked in advance and we did so. We had to report to the KFDC office first, take the pass from there and then proceed to base camp which is located 18 kms from the office. The roads are narrow, twisty and in average condition which passes through the tea plantation. We reached the base camp by 5 . As we aproched the base camp, the roads became from bad to worst. Its best to go in SUV with good ground clearance. An SUV with proper 4WD is the best option to reach there. We had to scratch the botton of innova couple of times in order to reach there. We reported to forest officer, filled up the documents and we were shown our respective tents. We settled down there quickly, because a long day journey has exhausted us a bit.
A black tea with marie biscut was offered. Even though we were amids the tea plantation, the tea tasted real bad. After tea, the sun went down and it became cold and dark. There were leeches everywhere and we have to be extra cautious about them. That night, we had non veg dinner which tasted bad and we slept. We woke up early morning. We had our breakfast, vacated our tent and we started.
Along with us, there were 21 other people who set out to accomplish similar mission.
First 5 kms was road. Not tarmac, but a way which only 4WD vehicles can go. It took more than 1 hour to complete the first stretch. The first point of rest where Rodo mansion which is 3 small cottages inside the forest. You can avail it by booki g it. We rested there, drank water and then we really started to climb the hill. Steep slops, steep inclines, slippery surfaces..it was a real task, we climbed the first hill and wr had the first superb view of the Meesapulimala. The view from the first hill is superb. Then again we descented, again climbing...we had to pass 5 or 6 hills before reaching there. And finally , at 1:15 pm we accomplished the mission. We werr 2540 mts above sea level. We had taken lunch along with us which we ate there. We spen around 1 hour on the hill. The view from top is breath taking. We could literally touch the clouds. At 2 30 we started to go downhill. The guide opted another route which is short but steep. Since it was downhill, it was not an issue. Wr had to walk through medows for 3 kms before finally entering deep forest. We saw paw prints of leoperd and other animals. After walking around for 2 hours we reached back.
We walked around 20 kms up and down .
Things to note-
* this is not for lazy people . You should have enough stamina to complete this
*food is average
*dont expect star facilities
*no network coverage except bsnl
*its 3000+booking charge
Its one of the best expereince and most of them should try it ecspecially keralites

Trekking to meesapulimala(Kanchenjunga of South India) is possible only by proper booking with KFDC. Climbing privately is illegal. If forest officer at the top finds you coming from the wrong route, you may get into trouble.
Ask the kfdc person to arrange the jeep to reach camp from munnar. If you book, it will cost more.
About the place, Wow!! Wow!! Wow!! don't give it a second thought, just go for it. You will be amazed for sure. It's a great treat for your eyes and soul. Landscape looks different with different kinds of plants for each 5min walk, simply amazing!
The whole trekking way is filled with lot of jawdropping sceneries.Â
When we reached the top, the clouds were moving around us and there were water droplets all over our hair and eyelashes. Felt the chill mountain breeze !!. As our trip was during winter, the summit was covered with mist and we were not able to see the distant places from there. So, try to visit in November to January.
I like to mention that, we filled our water bottle with water flowing through the valley. The water was pure and tasted really good. Please bring back all your empty water bottles, all your waste carry bags, etc., to the camp. Let's not pollute the Forest.Â
This trip is not preferred for aged people or a person with health issues. Remember, this is trekking, we have to walk nearly 16km that too all ups and downs.
Make sure, your check list includes below things too.
1.Salt ( You can find lot of leeches there. If it bites put some salt, leeches die when you put salt on it)
2. Glucose
3. Carry enough Cash (limited ATM)
4. No mobile network, rarely we can get BSNL network. Inform your family about this network problem before you reach camp.
Happy Trekking!!!

Hi, Can I ask how you booked the hiking trip? Was it in person at KFDC or online? In terms of timings, did you arrive at the campsite the night before, then the following day trek for how many hours? and then return to Munnar the next evening - so 1 night camping 2 days in total? Any details would be most helpful, thanks.

Hi, We had our package booked online from the site of Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC). You can select from multiple options of stay. Once the ticket is booked, they will guide you accordingly. We had reached the pickup point before 4PM the previous day. They took us in a four-wheel drive jeep to the base camp where we had our stay. The trek would take around 6 hours and the total distance is 8.5 KM. Food is included in the package. You can reach Munnar back by 4 PM for onward journey.
