Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Entry into the port is restricted to the general public. You need to get permission from appropriate authorities before admission
The only day these restrictions are relaxed is on April 5th every year, as this happens to be National Maritime Day. On this day Indian citizens are encouraged to visit the port & the ships inside the port.

The port is sitauated on the main national highway and the big ships can be easily seen from the road. It handles a lots of cargo and even various types. There are many travel packages also from the port to visit other places.

The place doesn't allow visitors and you need permission to enter the Port. The CISF jawans keep a close watch on the place and monitor activity. Lot of ships come in carrying timber, chemicals, crude oil and Natural gas. Lot of activity with exports of cashew, coffee etc....

We visited New Mangalore Port as a port of call during our recent cruise. Having researched Mangalore we knew there was little of interest in the area so, wanting to leave the ship after 3 days at sea we decided to walk to nearby Panambur Beach, about 3km away).
As soon as we left the ship were were shocked by how dirty and grimy the port area was. The port is an industrial area full of containers, the roads were covered with a 3cm layer of oil which spoilt our shoes, and the area was filled with large lorries belching out noxious fumes and stirring up dust and grime. The smell of the area was equally obnoxious.
As we were not going on an organised excursion we had no choice but to walk through this area. Panambur Beach is very nice but why cruise lines would choose to dock at Mangalore is beyond me. We will avoid any further cruises that use this port of call.

This port is extremely industrial and dispite a large plaque inside the terminal stating it was luxury, it was not. No ATM, no WiFi, tiny shop, toilets locked. Shuttle from the terminal was not wheelchair friendly so we could not leave the port! Taxis wanted to charge $50 for the short ride.
Enjoyed watching the Eagles overhead.

It may be a big new port but it appears to be the same old, same old. It is huge it looks dirty and run down and over crowded.
Security is a complete joke. It took us over an hour to get approval to go back to our cruise ship and then we had to meet face to face with a port agent. You can get into Fort Knox., easier.

We arrived as part of our cruise along the West coast of India. It is difficult to decide whether the view to port of the steel works belching out dirty smoke or the starboard sight of smouldering coal piles was better. After five hours there our balcony rail was covered in a dark dust. Not a place to return to! Terminal building has very few facilities.

Berthed there as part of our Indian cruise. The port is not really geared for cruise ships. Although it is on the cruise itinerary. It is a working port for coal and steel and containers so as such possibly not top of the list for a cruise ship. Very dirty and noisy. Took the shuttle bus into town which was the same as any town in any country in the world. The difference being the culture and people. It was interesting to see what is everyday life of the people in New Mangalore, as opposed to the tourist places you usually visit. In this respect it was worth going. Other than that I could have been in a number of towns in any industrial country.

I had an opportunity to visit New Mangalore Port oil Jetty after a gap of 12 years. The port is really clean and with little cooperation from the port users, this can compete with any foreign ports for cleanliness. Keep it up NMPT

This is one of the worst ports for visitors I’ve ever come across. People are friendly enough but there is not a lot to do in town. The surrounding area is a coal loading port on one side and general industrial on the other. Skip if you can and spend more time in Goa or Kochi.

No chance! It's also near a coal loading terminal and very busy. There are a few taxis at the port entrance. You should get a one way for around 500 rupees.

Hi, can you walk to the beach from the port? We're visiting Mangalore as a cruise destination.

Personally I would take a tuktuk or taxi. Negotiate price first though

Hi Rashim
we are stopping in New Mangalore from a cruise boat in May. My mother is 86 and walks only short distances. Is there enough for us to see if we wander around the town or would you suggest we hire a private tour for the day? thanks Jillian

The Port is not in the city and it is better you hire a car to take your aged mother around the city. There are a lot to see in this beautiful city. Welcome to India and enjoy the best of Indian hospitality. Have a great time in India.

We arrive on a cruise ship in May can someone tell me is it easy to travel to the city or should we take a tour from the ship. Any info greatly appreciated

Mangalore is a small city. Depending on what you like, you can take a Mangalore city tour which will take you to the St Aloysius Chapel having beautiful fresco paintings, A cashew factory to see the cashew processing and a hindu temple visit. The other option is to take a Jain temple and spices tour which takes you to a couple of ancient jain temples and shrines and a visit to an agricultural farm which is very interesting. The coaches take you very close to the places and hence not much of walking involved. I'm a guide and hence able to give you these specific information. I take tourists mainly on the inland tour of the Jain temples and Spice farm. You can ask for me by name when you arrive. My name is Rohan Fernandez.
