Neighbourhood: Basavangudi
Close to Jayanagar and home to the Bull temple after which it was named,
Basavanagudi is one of the oldest localities in the vibrant metropolitan of Bengaluru,
with structures replete with character, architecture and rich history. Numerous old
and beautiful temples define the true essence of this green locality filled with chirpy markets like the colourful Gandhi Bazaar, many parks with ancient trees, a wide range of unique eateries and dotted with tiny lakes. Taking a stroll here is full of
Malgudi Days throwback moments since this pretty lush green neighbourhood has still retained its old-world charm, which might remind you of scenes and stories from the popular collection of short stories by RK Narayan. From a stately old spacious home that once belonged to the Diwan of Mysore, a shop in a heritage family home, a 100-year old home that has turned into a reservoir of modern art, there is a lot of cultural confluence at every step.

- Michelle REssex, United Kingdom122 contributionsA glimpse into Indian cultureWe went on a little tour of Bangalore and visited the Bull temple and Ganesh temple. They are just next door to each other. The bull temple was very interesting and the story behind it fascinating. The Ganesh temple was much more active with local people coming to worship. It was absolutely fascinating and something I don’t think we will ever forget. We are a British couple and all the people whilst practicing their religion were extremely welcoming and we felt comfortable being part of the experience. A fascinating experience that I’m very glad we took the time to appreciate.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 January 2024
- Angela L17 contributionsGreat templeWent to the Bull Temple first with a guide, then back with my fiancé. It is busier at the weekend. The priest is lovely. No photos inside the shrine, but if you put money on the tray you will be given a blessing. The bull is the third largest in India and is well worth seeing. Don’t forget to walk round the outside of the central shrine.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2024

Temple dedicated to Nandi, the bull. The bull is carved from a large piece go black granite. No entrance charge but they request a donation.
Its a shame that it is also revered to the extent that they don't let you even take photos inside, yet on the walk up to it, it looks like a rubbish tip!
Interesting 10 min visit, but wouldn't advise going too far out of your way to see it!

Bull temple is also referred to as a Nandi temple. Temple is situated in basawanagudi area.
Idol of Nandi is carved out of a black granite, and it is believed that this is the oldest and biggest idol of Nandi anywhere in the world.
This temple is near to doda Ganesha temple. However cleanliness is lacking in surrounding area.

If you're in the area this temple is an authentic India experience. Be prepared to remove your shoes and walk barefoot to see the impressive bull statue and grounds around the temple. Photography is allowed outside the temple, but not inside. If you have a good zoom lens you can easily get some good photos of the Bull through the open temple doors. You'll also be able to get good photos of the decorations high upon the temple walls and roofs. Overall, the grounds are not very big so this visit isn't a commitment of hours, but you'll want to take your time.

Nandi Bull temple is one of the famous temples in Bangalore with historical background.
It is famous for the huge Nandi Bull statue and a reasonably well Gopuram.
The parking has to be done on the main road as there is limited space in the temple premises.
It is not a very big temple and not so architecturally rich but if you are in nearby area of Bangalore it can be considered for a visit.

Most ideal place to visit with family and friends. The Bull Temple in Bangalore, also known as Nandi Temple, is famous for its large statue of the sacred bull, Nandi. In fact, with a height of around 4.6 metres and a length of about 6.1 metres, the idol of Nandi in this temple is said to be one of the biggest in the world. This unique feature attracts many devotees and tourists to the place.

Peaceful and Tranquility are the two words that comes to my mind when I think of this place. This temple is able to maintain that status despite being in the bustling of the crowded traditional market place called Gandhi Bazaar in South Bangalore. If we closely watch the address of this temple you can see the location name as "Basavana Gudi", which literally translates to "Bull's Temple". Yes, this entire location in the busiest south Bangalore is named after this temple, and that is how important is this place for Bangaloreans. This temple is still able to maintain the old charm and peacefulness amidst staying close to the busy main road. It has a long history, you can find it in Google. If you are in Bangalore, pls visit this place if you are a temple lover.

It's a rather small temple centred around a big bull and an interesting story behind it. It is also surrounded by the peaceful Bugle Park. Definitely one to visit for first-timers, but I am not sure if I would make my way all the way here again just for this.

When I visited it was wedding season and many people were dressed in their best clothing. I was not, but I was well received by the pandit. The pavement can be very hot on the soles of your feet if you are not used to walking barefoot. For that reason it would be best to go early in the morning. Enjoy this beautiful temple.
